About Susannah

As a graduate of Bryn Mawr College, I know success in learning begins with the student's hard work and perseverance. My goal is to provide tutoring that is both educational and personalized, to ensure a comfortable working environment that leads to a rewarding experience. I am experienced with all age levels, from grades 3-12 through adult learners.

My start in tutoring began while I was still a student. A college professor I knew was teaching writing courses to mathematics students and needed an academic editor. I took up the role and began helping guide and shape personal essays, resumes, and technical writing assignments for her class. The experience was so rewarding, upon graduation I decided to continue tutoring and editing in addition to my career. I next mentored a member of the Armed Forces, enabling him to successfully apply for college after his tenure in the military. Through his first year of college, I was his tutor in English, and assisted him with academic writing in all his subjects. He is now a confident student with exemplary skills, and will be receiving his Master's Degree next year.

For tutoring sessions, I prefer to meet for the first in a quiet, public location such as a library, and I also host returning students in my home if they prefer a more private tutoring location. I have flexible hours on nights and weekends, and if there is no library convenient for you to travel to I'd be happy to discuss alternatives.

My teaching method involves building your strength in writing skills. For example, if you are working on an academic essay, we can begin by brainstorming your topic and determining the best course for you to formulate an outline (and timeline) for your work. Then we will build your paper in a way that works best for you, and I'll offer guidance, editing, and help you research and clearly define your topic. We will work at your pace and meet your deadlines for drafts and final papers. My goal is not to assign you more work, but to help you build your writing skills so that you can complete your academic papers, professional essays, resume writing, and composition work with confidence.

I have experience tutoring in academic, professional, and personal writing. I have proofread and edited manuscripts, academic essays, college applications, and tutored individuals in SAT reading and writing skills. I have also done editing and writing work for non-profits and educational institutions.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your writing!

I am available weekday evenings and every other weekend.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Writing

One of my main strengths academically and professionally has always been writing. In high school, it helped me achieve a 4.0 GPA (unweighted). In college, though I majored in economic international development, my writing greatly enhanced my thesis on theoretical economic aid work. During and after college I wrote professionally for newspapers, edited manuscripts for authors, and tutored adults and fellow students in academic and professional writing. I've also worked with children from elementary school through high school age on enhancing their writing skills, particularly for SAT prep work.

Amazing! So glad I found Susannah

I was so lucky to find Susannah and can't say enough good things about her. She helped me in a bind with my college paper and now is working with me on current assignments. She seems to have a rare ability to read my mind and help polish every aspect of my writing.
