About Terri

My love of teaching comes from my passion to inspire my students to never settle for less than his or her best - whatever your greatest potential is as a student, I will help you achieve or exceed that! Your success is my success. Whether you need help with English grammar, writing, critical reading and critical thinking skills, or are an elementary or middle school student struggling with a particular content area, my goal is to help you become a lifelong learner who thrives on intrinsic motivation and using what you have learned.

I specialize in tutoring English (literature, composition, and critical reading & writing test preparation) and Elementary school subjects. Whether we are working on learning how to write an essay, read and analyze Shakespeare or Jonathan Edwards, or we are learning to dividing fractions or improve reading and vocabulary, I employ a wide variety of teaching strategies in my tutoring because we all learn and process information in unique ways.

I hold my Pennsylvania Instructional II Certification in both English (7-12) and Elementary (K-6) and my New Jersey State Certification in Elementary (K-8) and have over 20 years of K-12 classroom teaching experience in both the traditional and virtual (online) environments to a wide variety of instructional levels: honors courses, basic skills, regular education, inclusion and instructional support. I also have experience working with students with learning and reading difficulties both in the whole class and small group settings. I have also completed both course and field work in diagnosing and working with students with special learning needs which has prepared me to work with a wide variety of learning styles within the context of the regular classroom.

Recognizing that the process does not always look like the product, I rely heavily on the methods and strategies that have worked in both the virtual and traditional learning environments and adapt those to fit the student's unique learning modality, grade level / age, and abilities in the tutoring environment. One of my goals for each session is to provide a lesson that is both challenging, but not overwhelming, and one that actively engages the student in the learning process. I assign challenging homework after every lesson and provide periodic assessments and feedback.

I hold myself to a high standard. For that reason, I often ask for feedback and offer a free one-hour consultation "Meet-n-Greet" session for the first session. Within 48-hours of your consultation session, I will provide an informal assessment detailing my observations and recommendations. In addition, I will not bill for any lesson in which the parent and student are not completely satisfied with my tutoring.

I try to be flexible with time. While I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I offer makeup sessions which are available either in-person or online.

To ensure students have a quiet and comfortable study space in which to work with me, I conduct sessions at a local public library. However, I am happy to travel to another location if that is more convenient for the student.

Are you a Homeschooling family or cooperative looking for a middle school or high school English literature and writing teacher? I would love to work with you to help provide a quality middle/high school English literature program within the context of a cooperative or home school environment. I am available to work with students in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

For Pennsylvania home schooling families: I'm also available as a Home School Evaluator (K-12) and I'm in process of completing coursework towards becoming a Diploma Program Evaluator through the Mason-Dixon Homeschoolers Association (MDHSA) Diploma Program. Please see the MDHSA website for more information.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold my Pennsylvania Instructional II Elementary (K - 6) and New Jersey State Certification Elementary (K - 8) certifications. In addition, I have taught at the elementary and middle school levels for 10 years, having taught 1st, 3rd, and 6th grades at the elementary level. I also taught 6th grade Reading, 7th and 8th grade Language Arts, 6th grade Math, 7th and 8th grade Math, and 7th and 8th grade Social Studies.

English

I hold my Pennsylvania Instructional II English 7-12 certification and New Jersey State Certification (K-8). I have extensive teaching experience English literature and composition, creative writing, and journalism at the high school and middle school levels, and in Pennsylvania preparing students for the PSSA Reading and Writing exams. My middle school teaching experience in New Jersey includes teaching Reading/Language Arts (RLA) and preparing students for GEPA examination. I also teach English literature and composition at the high school level (grades 9-12) in the virtual ("online") environment.

Grammar

I am currently a teacher of literature and writing at the high school level. I also hold my Pennsylvania Instructional II English 7-12 certification and am currently pursuing a M.Ed. Teaching and Learning with an English cognate through Liberty University's online graduate program. An essential part of writing instruction includes teaching and helping students understand written grammar (as opposed to spoken grammar). Writing is one of the four ways in which we communicate and to communicate effectively, a solid, working knowledge of grammar is key.

Literature

I am pursuing a M.Ed. Teaching and Learning, English cognate through Liberty University's online graduate program. I also currently teach literature at the high school level. Literature units include Lord of the Flies, The Color of Water, To Kill a Mockingbird, Shakespeare, The House on Mango Street, The Crucible, Of Mice and Men.

Microsoft PowerPoint

In addition to my traditional, brick and mortar, classroom experience, I also teach in the virtual or online environment. This requires extensive use of creating PowerPoint presentations for uploading into my virtual classroom platform such as Blackboard or Elluminate for instructional purposes. In my traditional classroom, I also use PowerPoint presentations uploaded into ActiveInspire for classroom presentations.

Microsoft Word

I don't think I've used an electronic typewriter since the late 1990s when I purchased a computer. Since then, I use MS Word as a word processor, use it to do mail merges and print envelopes, create a resume and cover letter - and even create worksheets for my traditional classroom. As a virtual teacher, I routinely use track changes after saving the read-only documents and grade many papers that way. I also use track changes to grade papers submitted by students in the traditional environment through Edmodo. I know I was completely lost without access to Word when my computer died a few weeks ago; thankfully everything including Word and my documents were restored.

Proofreading

I am qualified to teach proofreading as a teacher of writing. In addition to teaching the literature, I also teach writing associated with the literature. I have also developed writing curriculum for creative writing and journalism courses, both of which emphasized proofreading and editing.

Reading

In addition to my elementary school and middle school teaching experiences teaching students how to read and working with students to improve reading comprehension, I also teach critical reading and critical thinking skills which improves comprehension through the literature I teach. Even at the high school level, I rely heavily on my elementary and middle school experiences as a reading teacher.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary and etymology are the building blocks of reading and writing. You will not understand what you are reading if you don't have sufficient command of vocabulary or understanding of prefixes, suffixes, root or base words. I am qualified to teach vocabulary as an experienced teacher of reading and writing at all levels.

Writing

"If you want to become a better writer, you need to become a better reader. If you want to become a better reader, you need to become a better writer." Reading and writing are inseparable from one another; they are interdependent. As a teacher of writing and literature, as well as my experience in teaching an English / Critical Reading test prep course, I not only recognize the value of writing, but have also made myself a student so that I can instruct my students. Current graduate coursework also includes teaching writing across the curriculum, and teaching composition at the secondary and post-secondary levels.
