About Elaine

I have been a pianist since the age of four years old and have used that knowledge to teach private piano lessons. I'm an accomplished flutist as well. Growing up, piano lessons were continued until the age of 16. At that time, I started playing the flute after cross-training from the clarinet. I also started privately teaching students in my home after school. I've accompanied for numerous high school, college, church choirs through the years.

I am a pastor's wife. I've been employed as a teacher's aide/piano accompanist for Middle School/High School Choir from 2006 - 2010 in a New York State Public School District. I was a teacher in a local Christian School full-time, teaching third grade. I have been substitute teaching for a local Christian school, filling in from PreK through 12th grade for the past three years. I love to see the proverbial light bulb go on when the student starts to understand what he/she is being taught.

I love to read myself. Teaching a child to read is awesome, especially when they get excited after being able to read a sentence.

Spelling was my favorite subject in school and still remains as such. I was second place Spelling Bee winner while in Sixth Grade.

One of my hobbies, among many, is writing short stories. I have attended writer's conferences in the past to learn how to improve my writing/proofreading skills. At one point, I worked as an editor/proofreader for a local writer from my hometown area. I held that position for six months until the author fell into ill health and stopped writing. I enjoyed that position immensely.

I can promise that my best efforts will be given to help the child learn, understand and florish while being taught. There is nothing quite so rewarding as to see the child light up when he/she gets it!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I have always been good at grammar. I love to see the creativity of the student as they make up their own sentences using the knowledge that they've gained during class.

As a former Third Grade teacher/current Substitute Teacher, I have read over many grammar assignments and have corrected many mistakes. Grammar is one of my favorite subjects.

Handwriting

When teaching Third Grade, I physically would show the student the proper way to hold onto the writing utensil and how to form the letters on the paper. Paper is given to the student for practice purposes as well.

Reading

I have been a reader of all kinds of subjects since a young child. I've been employed as a First Grade Teacher's Aide and have had opportunity to work with those students while teaching them to read. There's nothing as rewarding as watching their faces light up at the realization that they just read their first sentence.

Spelling

I am a reader by nature. Reading truly opens up a person's mind to anything. It also gives exposure to all kinds of words, big and small. Spelling and Reading were my two best subjects all through my school years. Also, teaching gives me opportunity to share those abilities with my students.

Great tutor — "Great Tutor. I hired Elaine to tutor my daughter(3rd grade). She is great and quickly established a nice rapport with her. She likes the tutoring sessions and I can see the progress she is making. I am very pleased with her progress. Also she makes the piano sessions interesting, fun and beneficial.
