About Ryan

I am a Live Artist, critical writer, and poet. I hold a BA in English Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. In September 2014, I successfully completed an MA in Performance & Visual Practices from the University of Brighton, UK. From 2007-2013, I taught full time conversational English classes at a public middle school in Seoul, South Korea. I've been a tutor since I was a high school student. I thoroughly enjoying helping others learn and understand new ideas and information.

My undergraduate studies were in English literature and poetry writing, and then my postgraduate work moved into a practical and theoretical study of live art and performance. Though my teaching in Seoul was focused on spoken English, my tenure at Eonnam Middle School allowed me to design special courses and workshops in reading and creative writing. As an avid reader and writer, I enjoy discussing literature of all kinds. I've always loved language and have studied several foreign grammars. It's a great pleasure to share my knowledge and interests.

I learned Korean while living in South Korea for six years. My firsthand exposure to Korean language and culture enabled me to acclimate more easily to life in Seoul. After one to two years of informal study and help from friends and colleagues, I decided to study Korean more formally in my free time at Seoul National University. My Korean language abilities are by no means expert or fluent, but I strongly believe that I can encourage a beginner to become a more confident speaker and listener.

While I am comfortable tutoring a wide range of subjects, any subjects or areas involving the arts and culture are of particular interest to me. Teaching is about sharing, so my personal style reflects my work and interests. I am a lifelong learner and view education as an opportunity through which to grow. In my free time, I love to read essays, visit galleries, cook spicy Korean food for my friends, practice foreign languages, and travel. I look forward to hearing from students of all ages and abilities. I especially enjoy studying with university students and other adult learners. If you are looking for engaging conversation and enjoyable learning, then send me a message.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art Theory

I hold an MA in Performance & Visual Practices from the University of Brighton. My own art and writing practices think through affect, intimacy, and proximity in performance and public encounter. I feel comfortable discussing and tutoring students in the basics of formal art theory. I'm most interested in contemporary art practices and theories, and I'd be inclined to tutor students in aesthetics, critical theory, and politics as it relates to art.

College Counseling

I hold a BA in English Writing from the University of Pittsburgh, an MA in Performance & Visual Practices from the University of Brighton, and language certificates from Seoul National University and the Goethe Institute. This is my second year reading and evaluating undergraduate college applications for Carnegie Mellon University. I have firsthand experience and knowledge of university application processes in Korea, the US, and the UK. I'm currently in the early stages of applying to PhD programs in the US, the UK, and Europe.

English

I hold a BA in English Writing with an emphasis on poetry from the University of Pittsburgh. I taught English at a public middle school in Seoul for six years. I have experience tutoring second-language learners and native speakers.

ESL/ESOL

My undergraduate degree is in English Writing. While living in Seoul, I taught ESL in a public Korean middle school for six years. I have nearly ten years of experience teaching and tutoring native and non-native English language learners. My tutoring style is reflected by my interests and caters to an individual student's needs. Contact me if you are especially hoping to increase your knowledge of useful expressions and idioms, build more confidence speaking in public situations, and strengthen your writing skills.

Grammar

I have over a decade of experience learning, studying, teaching, and reinforcing English grammar. I've studied multiple other languages, which I believe aids me in my English instruction.

Korean

I learned Korean while living in South Korea from 2007-2013. My firsthand knowledge of Korean culture and language enabled me to more easily acclimate to life in Seoul. After one to two years of informal study and help from friends and colleagues, I decided to go deeper into my Korean language abilities. I studied formally at Seoul National University in my free time. My Korean is by no means expert or fluent, but I strongly believe I can tutor beginners in basic to intermediate grammar across all aspects of language acquisition (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).

Literature

My undergraduate degree is in English Writing with a focus on poetry and a minor in Theatre Arts. My speciality areas would be contemporary literature, global literature, poetry, plays, and creative nonfiction. I enjoy reading and writing about a wide variety of literature.

Proofreading

My BA is in English Writing, and I taught ESL for six years. I feel very comfortable being an editor and proofreader for critical and creative work.

Public Speaking

During high school I was a nationally-qualifying member of the National Forensic League and a state-qualifying member the Pennsylvania High School Speech & Debate League. My areas of expertise at the time were persuasive speaking and dramatic/humorous interpretation. During my undergraduate years, I further pursued public speaking by way of performance and theater. I have a minor in Theatre Arts (performance track) from the University of Pittsburgh. From 2007-2013, I taught middle school English in South Korea. While in Seoul, I was appointed head teacher in my district from 2010-2012, a position that required public speaking and liaison experience. I hold an MA in Performance & Visual Practices from the University of Brighton, UK.

Reading

I'm an avid reader of contemporary poetry, creative nonfiction, and lyric essays. My undergraduate degree was in English Writing with a focus on poetry. I taught ESL in Seoul for six years, during which time I designed and mentored a high level English reading group after school. As a young child, I struggled with reading, but years of practice and wonderful mentors have enabled me to share my love of reading and, even, reciting literature.

Theatre

I hold a minor in Theatre (performance track) from the University of Pittsburgh. My postgraduate degree from the University of Brighton is in Performance & Visual Practices. Cumulatively, I have nearly 18+ years of theater and performance experience and training. My specialities would be on acting training methods, writing for the stage, experimental performance practices, and devise theatre/performance. I'm a Live Artist working primarily in performance and installation. Additionally, I write critically under the umbrella of performance studies.

TOEFL

I taught conversational English in Seoul, South Korea for six years.

Vocabulary

I hold two degrees. I'm a poet and critical writer. I love reading and languages. Vocabulary may seem like a boring subject. I believe, however, that words can be exciting when used as expressive resources. When students, esp. young learners, discover a new verb or adjective that they find useful, suddenly their whole world opens up with possibilities for clarification and expression.

Writing

I hold a BA in English Writing and an MA in Performance & Visual Practices. I'm a poet, essayist, and critical writer. Especially during my MA in the UK, I have firsthand experience with dissertation and research preparation and writing.
