About Gayle

Bio

When I was a small child, I had a box of 96 Crayola® crayons and a Spirograph®, and I wanted to be an artist.

Then I decided that I should be an architect. It took awhile but I finally figured out that I should be an art teacher. I could combine my love of art with something that paid the rent. It was a win-win. Right? But college cost a lot of money and that dream was put on the back burner for a couple of decades. I learned my craft by doing it. Picking up things as I went along.

Then I went to college. Slowly. Class by class. It was probably twenty-five years before I got my MFA.

Meanwhile, I taught myself to be a designer. I started at the bottom by setting signs for display in a department store ... letter by letter ... like Gutenberg. And I fell in love with typography. Each job was a step up, or down, and then back up. But each one taught me something new. In the mid-90s I was doing production in a local print shop using traditional cut/paste and the boss walked into studio and plopped a Mac IIci on the desk and said "Learn this. It's the future". I'm happy I did.

I've been teaching the Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop for over 15 years. I've been teaching graphic design concepts and typography for nearly a decade. I know my stuff, and I know how to teach it. If the first technique doesn't work, I always have a backup or two.

Maybe you don't have the luxury of a lifetime to figure out how to do something. That's where I can help—either in person or online. We'll figure it out together.

Gayle Knows Her Stuff!

I'm a beginning InDesign student and am creating a book using the Blurb plug in. We got a lot done in an hour and a half and it was easy working with her. I would like to continue learning from her. Thank you, Gayle!
