About Jacqueline

The poet Adrienne Rich once asked, "What kind of beast would turn its life into words?" If you're a human being, you turn your life into words every day. You are already a writer, and as your tutor, I will give you the tools you need to write with more technical skill, style, and confidence.

My name is Jackie C., and I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Literary Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I am a full-time student and project assistant for the academic journal Contemporary Literature. I have a diverse range of interests, and although I have a background is in American literature and contemporary poetry, I will be teaching a course on medieval literature and modern fantasy this fall. I received my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English and Creative Writing from Penn State’s Schreyer Honors College in May 2013. My Master’s thesis project, a collection of documentary poems entitled “From Bethlehem,” received the Phi Beta Kappa thesis prize, as well as the English Department’s Best Creative Thesis Award. Although my thesis focused on creative writing, I have also published journalistic work. As an undergraduate, I worked as the Public Relations Intern for Penn State IT Communications, and my science and technology-oriented news writing has appeared in Penn State News and Penn State Newswire.

As a graduate student, I taught three semesters of English 15, a first-year rhetoric and composition course. Each semester, I taught a class of twenty-five students the fundamentals of grammar, sentence structure, style, argumentation, and narrative writing. As an English 15 instructor, I worked with students from varied backgrounds: I taught second-language learners as well as business, science, and engineering students who oftentimes struggled with writing. Outside the classroom, I was enthusiastic about meeting my students individually during office hours, and I believe the personal connection between teacher and student creates a comfortable space where creativity sparks.

I'm happy to fit my skill set to your needs. Whether you're a middle or high school student looking for help outside the classroom, a college student drafting an essay, or an adult learner looking to improve your technical or creative writing, I can help you meet your goals.
