I love teaching adult students. My passion for teaching/tutoring ESL as well as Portuguese is reflected in the large success rate of the learners I have worked with. I love languages, and I really enjoy teaching all skills in both languages, from communication/conversation to grammar to test preparation, such as the TOEFL.
I have a Bachelor's in English Language and Literature and a Master's of Education in TESOL (Teaching of English as a Second language). I have been a member of the International TESOL organization for years, and try to attend their conferences whenever possible. In addition, I was a teacher trainer for the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Office of Adult and Basic Education. During my career as an educator I have been a Program Coordinator at a local non-profit adult education organization, and Assistant Director of Literacy at a community college.
Besides working as a tutor, I also work as a as adjunct ESL Instructor at a college, and a Portuguese teacher at a local company. At the company I teach engineers and other professionals who do business with and in Brazil. I have also taught immigrants who needed to learn language skills needed to live and succeed in the United States.
My sessions are pretty dynamic and interactive, focusing on the students' needs and goals. My approach to teaching and learning is communicative and student-centered. I provide the learners with opportunities to practice the language in and out of the sessions and in context.
Frequency in meeting is key to learning, so I try to avoid cancellations at all costs. However, if cancelling a session is inevitable on the student's part, I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy with the possibility of making up for the sessions cancelled. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been in the field of adult ESL education in this country since 2000. I presently teach at Northampton Community College, where I have been for the past 5 years. I taught ESL to immigrant adults at the Literacy Center of the Lehigh Valley in 2000and 2001. At that point I became the Program Coordinator, and among my responsibilities were the hiring and training of teachers.
I am an adjunct instructor and tutor of English as a Second Language at Northampton Community College. Most of my classes there have been Grammar classes. As a tutor I have helped students with all areas of the language, but mostly with grammar. I have worked with students whose levels vary from ESL I to College English II.
I was born and raised in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Being a language lover, the fist language I fell in love with was my own, Portuguese. I have a Bachelor's in English Language and Literature with specialization in translation. I currently teach Portuguese as a Foreign Language at an engineering company in Bethlehem, PA.
