I am an encourager by nature, so being a tutor allows me to do what I do best. I have experience teaching in public and private schools, in addition to my extensive tutoring background; but I enjoy being able to give individual instruction that is tailored to the specific needs, personality, and learning style of the student. I am a parent myself and I have also worked with youth groups for many years, so there is a comfort level with teens ---I don't find them strange, intimidating, or unapproachable. They recognize my genuine interest in them as individuals and we usually develop a good rapport. This is even more important in a tutoring setting than in a classroom. I like to make an overall plan that includes realistic, measurable goals. I use a variety of approaches, adapting as I get to know my pupil. I learn the interests of the student and find ways to work it into the learning process. Sometimes it's easy and sometimes not, but students always appreciate the effort to make the material relevant and appealing. I am always open to input and feedback from parents, guardians, and students to help make the process as productive as possible. I am passionate about the subjects I teach, and Students tell me that it helps them to also enjoy the material; enthusiasm is contagious! My goal is for students to master the material, but also to learn to think for themselves and to believe in themselves!

My daughter always struggled with standardized tests because of her ADD and it was so hard to find the right tutor to address her issues. Her dream is to become a teacher and because of the testing issues she was ready to give up trying to pass her last and hardest Praxis. She got excellent grades in school and excellent ratings in her observations and student teaching because she can empathize with the students who are struggling, but she needed to pass this test. Then Jim answered my inquiry. He is an amazingly talented tutor and coach. He connected with my daughter right away and understood the barriers she was facing in her thinking processes. He analyzed her answers and gave her strategies to approach the test that really worked. He boosted her confidence with his positive attitude and encouragement. In just 3 short weeks he helped to raise her score by 15 points and she passed. Now she can realize her dream and start her career. Anyone who has children with these difficulties should hire him. He has the talent and ability to your child succeed.
My daughter's Critical Reading/writing scores increased 200/100 points after spending just a few hours with Jim. He was very accommodating with scheduling sessions around her busy schedule.
I was so glad that we contacted him again to look over her college essays. She had a few different rough drafts on different topics, and getting that outside assistance was priceless. He really was able to connect with my daughter, and she learned a lot from Jim.
Jim understood my son right away and was extremely patient with him. My son felt very comfortable with him and worked very well for Jim.
Incredibly helpful tutor with a wide variety of knowledge at his disposal. He has been an absolute help to my child with his confidence in taking the SATs. We're very happy for his assistance and could not possibly ask for anyone better.
James is a very patient tutor. He knows how to engage the student to want to learn and absorb the information.
I have never been comfortable with public speaking, and have successfully avoided these situations until recently. I found myself agreeing to give a presentation for a large group of colleagues at a local hospital. Once I agreed, the nerves and then the panic set in. I decided to hire James from WyzAnt to help not only with the presentation itself, but to help me deal with these awful fears.
I met James at his house and we went over my presentation page by page. I learned so much in that hour!! James taught me about pacing, what to do if I lost my place, how to view the audience, and how to use my notes more effectively.
During my presentation one week later I was nervous, but I was excited too since I had James’ voice in my head. I knew I had a solution for any problem that might arise. The presentation went well! I know I could not have had that level of success without the tutoring and support from James. He was instrumental in my success, and I plan to see him again for help with my next speaking adventure.
This is the first time my son Josh has ever had a tutor. I worried that he might not benefit, but I knew he needed some help focusing and learning new skills. James has been a GREAT FIT! He took the time to get to know my son, not only to figure out how to help him academically, but also to earn his respect and trust.
Building that relationship was critical. My son actually looks forward to studying with James and they have an amazing rapport. I've seen an improvement in his overall attitude toward school work and studying. I hope the hard work is evident when he takes the upcoming SAT's. Thank you, James.
James was a huge help in a number of ways during my last semester at college. He was extremely easy to get in touch with and always made time for our appointments when ever I needed help. He went above and beyond to get to know me, where I was at with my work, as well as understanding my personal way of learning, which made it a lot easier for us to accomplish everything we took on. James is extremely intelligent, and in the rare scenario he doesn't exactly know the information, he makes it his duty to return to our next lesson as a professional on the issue. Overall, James was a pleasure to work with and truly made a difference in the way I learned and significantly improved my grades in the class. Highly recommended!!!
Jim advised my daughter on proper study techniques for taking the SAT. Her scores improved greatly .She is receiving merit based scholarships from numerous colleges. Well worth the money.
James was a great tutor for my young teen. He was encouraging and engaging. He helped my son improve his writing in just a few sessions. I would recommend him and plan on using his tutoring again this summer.
My son had essentially a month to prepare for his second round of SAT's. His scores in English and writing had to increase or he would have limited possibility of getting into the universities he desired. Within essentially a month, Jim was able to connect with my son and train him to think differently about his approach to the SAT test. I was amazed to see the conversion in my son's attitude and his self confidence soared. Regardless of what the final scores come out to be, Jim's unique style and patience left a marked impression on my son.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Although my teaching certification is in English, I have always excelled at and enjoyed Math; consequently, I have done a lot of Math tutoring over the years. I especially enjoy helping students to think logically and without fear about Math. I find that most students have decided that they are not capable of doing Math; once I help them see that they really can do it, we are on our way. I like to employ analogies and multiple approaches to problems until we find one that clicks with the student. I am patient and encouraging, but insist on work!
I am a pastor and ordained minister with a Bible School diploma in addition to my BA in English. I have studied the Bible for years. I have also taught Bible at the high school level.
As a certified English teacher, I taught English to Middle School and High School students in MA and PA. I have also had success tutoring this subject. In general, I focus on reading comprehension and writing skills. We can work on the literature they are currently studying or other more appealing reading, when appropriate and possible. I have some basic strategies that students can use to help them across a wide range of reading and writing assessments. I also work on test-taking skills, a particular area of expertise that I love to share.
I enjoy math myself, which helps my students relax and enjoy it, too. I am always aware that every student is a unique individual, and I try to unlock the key to each one's particular way of thinking and learning. Most students who struggle with geometry think it's over their head. I help build confidence and try to make it understandable. One of my goals is for the student to feel smarter and more confident when I am through with them!
As a certified History teacher, I taught classes specifically about Government and politics, including AP U.S. History. I love the subject, and my enthusiasm and ability to make the subjects relevant to young people has led to positive results in my classes. I have many students tell me that they never cared about government or politics until my class, but now they are involved and talk about it to their friends. I know my material, I enjoy students as people, and I work hard to make it interesting.
Grammar may not seem very interesting, but it can make a huge difference in the quality of your writing. You will sound smarter, more convincing, and people will take your written words more seriously. You'll be surprised at what a big difference a few learned skills can make!
I have tutored Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and SAT Math for years. My SAT Math scores were in the 700s, although I went on to major in English. I am usually able to help students gain confidence and knowledge, and the two go hand-in-hand. My current tutoring in SAT prep has me right on top of this subject.
I am a fantastic test-taker, receiving Certificates of Excellence in my subject areas of the PRAXIS. I have been certified in two subjects and I tutor many subjects across a broad range of disciplines. Student scores on standardized tests have improved greatly after I showed them test-taking techniques and strategies that work on any test. I have also worked unofficially with colleagues to help them pass their PRAXIS exams. I know I can help anyone be prepared to be confident and competent as they go to take their tests.
My experience includes negotiating defense contracts for the U.S. Army; functioning as a classroom teacher; and being a pastor, preaching and teaching to various audiences. I have also taught Speech classes in high school.
By middle school, many students (particularly boys) believe that they aren't capable of reading well. I work hard to help each student believe in themselves and to understand that they just need a little help to catch up. My approach is very flexible, allowing for individual personalities and strengths.
Attitude is everything when taking the SAT. So we work a lot on building confidence. I certainly will spend time on the various Math areas, concentrating on the weaknesses of the student. But another key aspect of maximizing your score is mastering a few test-taking strategies. My goal is for each student to show up on test day knowing that they will do well.
We will use exceptional SAT helps such as books, websites, and previous tests. I always devote time to test-taking skills and mental approach, as well. This can improve scores dramatically.
I teach simple strategies that can greatly improve writing grades. Grasping a few clear techniques can enhance confidence and lead to better results. I also focus on meeting the expectations of the 'reader'.
Study Skills are important in order to succeed in school at any level. As a classroom teacher at the middle school and high school level, I have always worked to improve these skills with my students. Note-taking, keeping track of assignments, and organizing papers are just some aspects that help in the classroom. At home a student needs to learn good study habits, proper use of time and resources, etc. These learned skills are essential to success in school and life.
Most students lack some basic tools that could help them be more confident, competent writers. My goal is to help them gain confidence in a few important skills. This makes a big difference now, and it sets the stage for greater gains later.
