About Salvatore

Although I am a registered architect, I have been expanding my professional credentials to include teaching English as a second language. To this end, I completed a Cambridge University CELTA training course at Teaching House in New York City in 2010. The training I received included an emphasis on evaluating different student learning styles and customizing lesson plans accordingly. It has always occurred to me that teaching is one of the most rewarding professions. In the past few years, I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching students of all nationalities in both classroom, private and virtual settings.

Additionally, I have been expanding my teaching services to include my passion for free-hand drawing. I consider drawing to be one of the most communicative forms of language. I look forward to training future architects, designers and artists in the fundamentals of free-hand drawing and enhance their ability to express themselves visually.

My diverse professional experiences has connected me to people of all backgrounds and makes me uniquely qualified in the language instruction and drawing fields. As an ESL teacher I can offer students my passion for language and design and help them achieve their goals.

Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Architecture

Architecture in its purist expression transcends the physical built environment.
I believe that the study of architect should involve both physical and artistic concerns. I have been a registered architect in New York state for 21 years and graduate of The Cooper Union in New York City and have approached each of my projects with a deep appreciation for the poetic and pragmatic. I can offer guidance to anyone interested in this architectural philosophy.

Art History

I hold a Bachelor of Architecture degree from The Cooper Union in New York and have completed four (4) semesters of History of Architecture. Additionally, I have completed the following courses with the noted art critic and lecturer Dale Harris:
History of Renaissance Art, The Art of Caravaggio and history of Baroque Art. Also, I have studied the history of Modern Art with writer and art critic Dore Ashton.

Drawing

Since my childhood it has occurred to me that drawing is a fundamental method of communication. My education as an architect at New York City's Cooper Union School of Architecture reinforced this belief.
I spent five years drawing under the instruction of figurative painter Sue Fergusson Gussow, Reuben Kadish and Anthony Candido. Additionally, I served as a teaching assistant in a foundation drawing class at Cooper Union and have continued to draw and paint regularly as part of my architectural vocation.

My approach to drawing involves obsessive observation of the physical environment. Additionally, I believe that understanding and learning from the continuum of the history of drawing is the best teacher. I hold to a drawing methodology that stresses observation of both positive and negative space, scale and structure.

ESL/ESOL

I hold a CELTA certificate from Cambridge University and have been teaching ESL since 2010. I have taught all levels of English including TOEFL and Cambridge First Certificate test preparation. Additionally, I have extensive experience in teaching Business English and BULATS exam preparation at a First Language Center in New York and The Language Company in Philadelphia. My approach to language acquisition is based on a communicative methodology using various techniques.
