About Bryan

I provide custom tutoring in a variety of areas from elementary math and reading to college algebra, chemistry, and history. While I am a historian by trade I am an engineer at heart. I have learned that it is easier to adapt my teaching to the needs of students rather than attempt to make them learn in a way which might be contrary to their learning style. I developed this method while an instructor in the Navy and refined it as an elementary school tutor. I love watching students get excited when it finally clicks and they grasp the fun of learning.

I have an amazing wife Olivia, and we have three children, Nathan, Deborah, and Daniel. I was an engineer for the Navy and was honorably discharged in 2008. I received my B.A. degree in History from Geneva College (summa cum laude with research honors) and a MA in Church History from Trinity International University (magna cum laude with research honors). I am currently pursuing a second masters degree at the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

While in the Navy I taught a variety of courses as part of the ship's training department. I have taught numerous classes at various church congregations. I have tutored undergraduate students formally and informally in a variety of subjects ranging from college algebra, chemistry, computer science, and natural science to American, European, and non western history. I also tutored and mentored elementary and middle school students at an after school program for a number of years.

My adaptive teaching style is combined with a solid foundational understanding of the subjects I tutor. I will never come unprepared and I will always be ready to help. I take my students learning seriously and value feedback.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

While an undergraduate at Geneva College I took Bible 112 (Old Testament), Bible 113 (New Testament), Bible 200 (Exegesis and Hermeneutics), and Bible 300 (Foundations on Christian Thought). I have also taken Systematic Theology and Biblical Theology courses at graduate school. I have also done years of personal academic studies on various topics and passages in preparation for Sunday schools, Bible studies, and preaching.

Elementary Math

I was a tutor for an after school program named Tiger Pause which focused on tutoring underprivileged students in a poverty stricken town in western Pennsylvania. The students here were from kindergarten to 8th grade. I had the privilege of tutoring these 30+ students for a number of years.

This time of tutoring with Tiger Pause taught me how to mold my teaching style to the individual needs of each student in order to help them grasp the concept under consideration. This meant learning how to determine the individual challenges a student and then find the best creative way to present material and have them grasp it.

I grew up in the public school system taking advantage of the free computers which Apple had donated to our school. Our family also have a number of apple products which we use daily for work and pleasure (including Macbook Pro and Mac Mini). As a person with some programing interests I have also gotten to know some of Mac's developer tools.

I own a photography studio (Schneider Family Photography) in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. I have photographed over 100 weddings and have done countless events, families, seniors, and newborn sessions as well. When teaching, I focus on both the philosophy and technical aspects of creating images. Everything starts with emotion and aesthetics. What is the artist communicating with this image? What emotion is the image evoking? What is the purpose of this photograph? To understand photography is much like understanding and appreciating any other fine art. Once the philosophy is established we move into exposure, composition, color management, lens choice, flash (on and off camera), & etc. We always start with the minimum amount of equipment to master the basics and then move onto more advanced techniques. Knowing why you are creating each image before pushing the shutter. The gear is a tool. But, a photographer's mind, eye, and heart are where an image needs to start. Too many teachers are gear intensive but don't teach the fundamentals of art first. Create the image in your mind first, then craft the light and the subject to make that image. This is how I teach photography.

Study Skills

As an academic I have taken many workshops on study skills. These have ranged from how to read effectively, how to prepare for tests, how to write under time constraints, effective memorization techniques, and various methods or styles of learning. And, as a person who has struggled with ADHD I have had to use many techniques myself.

In high school I swam competitively. Then after the Navy I swam competitively at the collegiate level. In addition to swimming collegiately I also dove.

Water Polo

I played Water Polo for four years while in High School. I also managed the female water polo teach for 2 years. This entailed maintaining equipment, traveling with the team, operating clocks, and maintaining the books. I also volunteered as a coach for the High School for one year between the Navy and undergraduate schooling.

Helpful and thorough — Our sixth grade son has trouble organizing his homework, and frankly it's no wonder. We gave Bryan a long list of instructions for where to look for homework assignments - assignment notebook, multiple online teacher sites (with different instructions for each), and a separate place for "missing" assignments. Bryan quickly mastered the process and helps our son each week stay on top of his work, c ...
