As a tutor, I am in a unique position to help my students learn. I am neither a parent nor a teacher, so I can't deal out punishments or bad grades. I'm in neutral territory. This puts me in a great place, because I am free to act as teacher, mentor, guide, friend, or confidante. My role can change to meet the requirements of the individual student. I have several students who are in the same subject in school, yet our sessions together are vastly different because my role in each of their lives is different.
I have been an educator for over a decade, and I have been a private tutor for more than three years. In all my years of experience, I have never come across a student that just wasn't smart enough to succeed. I have, however, discovered a whole host of students whose learning styles did not match their teacher's teaching style. For the visual learner, a Powerpoint presentation is an excellent tool. For the aural learner, a lecture is ideal. But what about the student who learns through movement or touch? What if the visual learner has a teacher who only lectures? These discrepancies between teaching and learning styles can make a student feel like they are inadequate. I am here to bridge the gap between styles. Lily takes the time to build a rapport with her student (my daughter) and the family as a whole. She is patient and listens to my daughter's needs. We are very happy with Lily's services.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
MS Environmental Management
Instructor of Biology at Lehigh Carbon Community College and Cedar Crest College.
4 years experience tutoring biology at high school and college levels.
While getting my undergraduate degree in Biology, I studied botany both in an academic and a field setting. I studied under botanist Amy Faivre, who dedicated her research to studying succulents endemic to the Florida peninsula. I performed field work in two areas: non-native invasive plant removal and remediation, and propagating native plant species. I also taught native plant classes at the Wildlands Conservancy and Land Trust for two years. Additionally, the classes I teach at the college level have an in-depth botany lab.
In addition to taking Evolution and Advanced Mendelian Genetics as an undergraduate, I taught two Genetics Labs at Lehigh University and the genetics portions of Bio 101, Bio 105, and Bio110 at Lehigh Carbon Community College. Additionally, my undergraduate degree focus in Biodiversity included in-depth population genetics.
Over ten years of teaching experience ranging from the classroom to private tutoring.
