About Katherine

I am a youth ministry leader and content writer who has spent years in educational settings, both tutoring one on one, and teaching classes and groups as large as 35. My favorite part about teaching is getting to explore new concepts with students, and find ways to make them interesting and fun.

I graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 2007 with an AB in East Asian Studies, with a focus on Japanese language. After graduation, I taught ESL in Japan for just under a year, where I met my wife (another educator.) Since then, I have worked in a variety of educational settings, including after school science and fitness programs, ESL tutoring, Japanese language tutoring, mentoring, elementary school tutoring, and youth ministry. Teaching makes me feel alive, and is my greatest passion.

As for my personal interests, I love reading, writing, learning about new cultures, cooking, and crafting. I'm pretty geeky and love to go on adventures.

I am certified in TKT band 4 ESL teaching through Cambridge University. I speak conversationally fluent Japanese. I am regularly background checked for clearance to work with children via my employment at the church. I have also ghost-written award winning blog posts.

I look forward to meeting and working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I am a youth ministry adviser at a Presbyterian Church. I am at present the sole paid youth ministry staff member. I have been working as a faith leader since 2012. Most of my time is spend teaching students about God and the Bible.

Cooking

I am a self taught cook with an extensive repertoire. I specialize in Japanese, Italian, Mexican, and European cooking. I have tutored several individuals in the basics of cooking, and run a cooking class session at least once a semester with my students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience teaching kids ages 6-16, and am currently enrolled in school to become an elementary school teacher. I have knowledge and access to resources for all elementary ed topics.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESL since 2008, and have Band 4 certification in Cambridge's TKT for Teaching of English as a Second Language. I have worked with both children and adults.

Religion

I am a religious educator at a Presbyterian church, where I work with teens. I also have extensive history of religious studies, including a major in East Asian Studies which covered multiple Asian faiths. My undergraduate thesis was written on the Purple Texts of the Mao Shan Revelations, a Taoist religious text on which modern Chinese calligraphy was based.

Sewing

I have been sewing since 1998. I have yet to attempt a project that I have not been able to complete. I have, in the past several years, begun designing my own plus sized costumes of favorite characters, since there are often not available on the market. I have extensive teaching experience, and am familiar with both hand sewing, machine sewing, and quilting. Past projects include casual, formal, and costume clothing, stuffed animals, character plushies, decorative pillows, totes, and quilt squares.
