My self portrait above was drawn at the age of twenty two after having just graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. I began private teaching of children and adults at age 18 and have over 40 years of experience as a successful global artist, designer, lecturer, and art educator. In addition, I have the prestigious honor of being the 2011 U.S. Fulbright Fellow in Art for the nation of Nepal; the Fulbright Program is the flagship academic program of the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, solo and group exhibitions, I’ve represented the United States in two international arts festivals. My work is represented in museum and private collections, in the US and abroad.

Classically trained, yet thoroughly contemporary, I am conversant in a very wide range of international art styles, mediums, techniques and theories, and proficient in comparative anatomy. I offer my students a unique breadth, depth, and range of technical, stylistic, and creative skills and vocabularies, offering classical, contemporary, eastern, western, fine and design skill sets. I am passionately dedicated to empowering students to realize their full creative potential. I energize and inspire my students, strengthening their innate talent through intellectual and technical clarity, and building personal excitement through mastery of creative skills.

I began private study at the age of twelve, and graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from which I received the certificate in painting, graduating simultaneously from the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) from which I received my BFA, with additional studies at Temple University and the Barnes Foundation. In addition, I enjoyed a very successful independent commercial design career; I was Senior Designer heading a 25 man design team for the Franklin Mint, an $800m corporation; I continue to accept select design commissions. Presently I continue to study privately in Nepal with Master Rabindra Shakya, grandson of the famed Kuber Singh Shakya, whose family of historic masters boasts of royal patronage and a 400 year lineage.

In addition to my dedication to visual art, I am also deeply interested in a wide range of subjects which inform my work, among them, psychology, the anthropology of religions, comparative art histories, philosophies and history. I am widely traveled and uniquely conversant in international aesthetics, and expand and deepen my students’ understanding of the many expressive styles and forms of today’s global art world. I have an extensive web presence, and appreciate the value of new media, and am actively engaged with the international arts community.

Drawing,

Drawing

I received rigorous training in drawing through the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in both open and closed form drawing, with studies from cast and life models, and in comparative anatomy; this training built upon six previous years of private training. I am fully conversant in a wide range of drawing mediums. My continuous professional studies of multi-cultural concepts of drawing, as well as drawing in design application, fully equip me for drawing instruction in a wide range of approaches and applications.
Painting

Painting

I received rigorous training in painting through the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, graduating with a Certificate in Painting and BFA in Painting from the University of the Arts (formerly the Philadelphia College of Art.) Study encompassed representational traditions and non-representation conceptual approaches, material applications and techniques; this was preceded by six years of private study. Four decades of personal study, professional exhibition success, and international design experience inform my command of both traditional and contemporary aesthetic concepts and their fine and applied applications.

Best drawing tutor we have ever had

My 13 year old loves drawing, and Maureen has been the best tutor we have ever had for her. Maureen has developed a program tailored for my daughter, taking into consideration her age and special interest. Maureen’s teaching style is extremely engaging, clear and direct. Every lesson has been a blast! There is so much information and fun packed into each lesson, and my daughter really loves it! We highly recommend Maureen to anyone in need of a drawing tutor.

Maureen's teaching style is incredibly effective

I am an art student with very little knowledge of technique. Maureen's patient and informative teaching style has given me the confidence to truly enjoy drawing as I learn to work with crayon, chalk and charcoal in preparation to ultimately begin painting. She is very professional and talented and I have learned a great deal from her in a very short time. Our lessons are very enjoyable. My lessons have been very rewarding as I experience progress with each lesson.

Great lessons!!

Every since I have been working with Dr. Maureen I have seen a promising change in my skills. In lesson 1, I was taught different ways to study the skull of a human being and it's importance for drawing portraits. I was told to hold the skull while I'm sitting at home, get a feel for the skull, it will start to create a vision in my mind for when I draw pictures I would start to know how to draw without looking at things I would start to draw from my mind. I also, in lesson one, was told to learn my material, start to use them and gain a understanding of what each one does for me when I'm working. Lesson 2 was also a productive one as well, I was taught the basics of contour drawing and blind drawing. I have been using these as practice and their really making my skills better!! I'm starting to learn how to look at the object less when drawing something I have never known how to do. I was also given two books to look at one titled "The drawing of Filippino lippi and his circle" and another called "Beauty and violence" Japanese prints by Yoshitoshi. I can't wait to get into these books and learn some history about art and different styles of it which is very important in becoming a successful artist. I love working and learning from Dr. Maureen. She is a very skilled and talented artist and I'm looking forward to more lessons into the future with her. I am confident I will become a wonderful skilled artist if I continue to work with her... Can't wait for lesson 3!!!
