About Amanda

The SAT and ACT tests are created so that the tests are not a measure of your intelligence, but rather of your ability to take their test. I've studied both intensely and can help you learn all of the tricks and traps for the reading and writing portions of each test. As a high school English teacher I've had years of experience helping students to prepare for these standardized tests. As a tutor, I can give you individualized help on the areas where you struggle the most. Not all students learn the same, and one of my strengths is finding just the right way to teach you what you need to know.

The new SAT is based off the new Common Core standards. As a teacher in Maryland, where Common Core was adopted and implemented years ago, I am very familiar with the new style of the reading passage questions and have spent years preparing students to answer these types of questions. I've also thoroughly read through "The Real ACT Prep Guide" which was created by the makers of the ACT. The ETS SAT website and the ACT study books contain hundreds of pages of information that I have taken and reorganized in a way that is manageable and more meaningful to students. I have also categorized the different questions for each section so that when analyzing answers, we can determine which type of reading and writing questions are giving you the most trouble and then focus our efforts on that specific type of question.

My tutoring services include all of the following:

-Lessons on all the tricks and skills needed to get higher test scores. For example, should you read the passage first or go right to the questions and skim for answers?
-Personalized study/lesson calendar made to fit your needs and your already busy schedule.
-Vocabulary lessons that go beyond rote memorization.
-Grammar lessons/tips that focus on what will likely show up on the test.
-Pretest to determine what sections or areas of the test you need the most help in.
-Post test so we can see how much progress you've made since the pretest and so you can go into the real SAT/ACT with confidence in your new abilities.

Unfortunately, the SAT/ACT (tests that measure how well students take a test) can be a determining factor in college admissions and whether or not a student receives a scholarship. Let me help you ensure that you fill out your college applications with the best possible scores to help your application stand out against the thousands it is up against.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I minored in creative writing at Towson University where I took courses in news writing and creative writing. Both courses focused on following all grammar guidelines laid out in the APA Style Handbook. I have also tutored and taught courses that focus on proper grammar.

Literature

I have taught world literature, American literature, and British literature during my four years of teaching at a High School. Along with classic novels, I have also taught units on more modern works of literature as well as short stories and plays. One of my strengths in teaching literature is helping the reader to identify themes throughout the text.

Reading

In my years teaching high school English, I often worked with students who have special needs and do not read at grade level. I specialize in assisting readers with character maps and plot graphic organizers that allow struggling readers to better retain the information they are reading. I also help readers better develop before, during, and after reading strategies that will continue to help them well after school.

SAT Reading

For four years I have taught students tips and strategies for taking the SAT. Focuses in my lessons are what to expect from the test in the form of what questions will be asked and how to eliminate trick answers, as well as a focus on vocabulary since that often trips up students just as much as trick answers. I have also proctored the SAT and can give students an insight into what to expect the day of testing.

Special Needs

I currently hold my special education teaching certification in Maryland and have four years experience working with students with special needs. My experience with special needs students ranges from working with students with slight learning disabilities in co-taught standard classes to working with students with severe learning disabilities in a special self-contained classroom setting.

Vocabulary

I am certified to teach English 7-12 in Maryland and Pennsylvania. I have had four years of experience teaching English 9, 10, 11, and 12 which includes vocabulary.
