About Rachel

Hello! My name is Rachel, and I am an ESL teacher. I graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a Cum Laude Bachelors Degree in Linguistics and Languages: Chinese and Japanese.

I studied Latin in high school, where I served as Latin Club President, and I taught Latin to elementary students for two years. In 2013, I began tutoring both children and adults in ESL, reading, and math, and worked as a teacher's assistant at the elementary level.

From 2014-2016, I lived in Shanghai, China, where I taught English. I worked at EF Education First, where I taught students ranging from age 3 to age 18. I also worked at Shanghai Gold Apple International Kindergarten, where I was a homeroom teacher. I taught in two classrooms, teaching English lessons and conducting all activities in English.

I have a 120-hour In-Class TESOL Certification, and am certified to tutor ESL, basic literacy, and GED preparation.

I have a myriad of experience working in the classroom, from kindergarteners to adults. What makes me so happy about teaching is helping my students to realize their own potential. I find teaching rewarding, and my students teach me everyday! I am a proactive, passionate, dedicated, and supportive teacher, and I use my creativity to employ multiple methods of learning--visual, tactile, and auditory--to help my students achieve maximum success. I am flexible: I cater to the learning preferences and skill-set of each individual, because I understand that everyone learns differently.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to learning with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Currently I work as a tutor and teacher's assistant in an elementary school. I tutor fifth grade math, kindergarten and first grade reading, and I work as an assistant in a first grade classroom. I also tutor English to students ages 6-8. I also used to teach Latin to first graders, which involved writing my own lesson plans.

I feel very comfortable teaching all subjects at the elementary level, as I have shown in completing the elementary math and science tests, and in my hands-on experience in elementary schools.

Phonics

I went to college and got a Cum Laude degree in Linguistics and Languages. I took a class on phonetics and phonology, which involved the sounds of language and how they are made with the mouth. I have a lengthy knowledge of how words are broken down into syllables, letters, and their smallest sounds, or their individual phonemes. I love phonics and currently teach reading to a group of first graders.
