Hello! My name is Dorothy and my passion is to help students understand science: I hold biology (all levels), chemistry, and general science Pennsylvania type I certifications. Currently I substitute teach in several High schools, and have all my child abuse and criminal background clearances. I also teach Anatomy and physiology I and II in the community college and the university, and have also taught microbiology, introductory biology for majors and non-majors, and developmental biology.
In my previous positions, I worked as a research scientist as a biologist and a biochemist. My hands-on medical knowledge and background comes in handy when I am giving "real life" examples of the more complex concepts in biology and chemistry. In fact, I'm a firm believer in an interactive approach between student and teacher where we work together to reach your goals. To do that, I have an array of learning materials, both visual and interactive, to better understand how you learn best and to help "unpack" difficult topics into smaller portions before integrating it into a larger concept. Education courses and my student teaching experiences that I took at Arcadia University also helped me apply my scientific knowledge to teaching the sciences to students with all levels of science knowledge.
So if you want to improve your grades in biology, chemistry, or general science, let me help you develop the science learning solutions you need to achieve the goals you desire. Hello! I met with Dorothy B. at the library on Feb. 8th. We reviewed the chemistry portion of my Anatomy & Physiology Part 1 course. The session included learning the definitions and structures of subatomic particles, atomic mass and weight as a review of a past quiz I had. We also reviewed facts about isotopes. Then Dorothy and I reviewed hydrolysis and dehydration synthesis and how they build up and break down energy. We then reviewed the types, structures, and functions of various monosaccharides and dissacharides, as well as amino acids. I was able to further understand the various reactants and products, chemical reactions, and subatomic particles, which I had struggled to understand in my course. Dorothy's use of drawings and Power Point slides improved my comprehension of chemistry.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold triple certifications at the secondary education level (grades 7-12) in Biology and General Science. As part of the certification process, I received honors status on the Praxis II Biology test. I have classroom experience as a long-term substitute teaching academic, honors and Advanced placement (AP) Biology at Germantown Academy, Lower Moreland High School, and Cheltenham High School. I use an inquiry-based approach to teaching the Sciences and use real-life examples to break down complex topics in Biology for my students. In addition, I hold a BA degree in Biology and a PhD degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
At the college level, I've instructed introductory biology courses taught, both non-majors and majors. I've also taught at Gwynedd Mercy University for one year, and Montgomery County Community College for three and a half years.
