About Marissa

I'm so excited to share my expertise in the sciences! I began tutoring as a high school student, and was a Teaching Assistant throughout college. I am currently wrapping up my Master's degree in Environmental Studies and I have over 5 years of experience as a wildlife conservation professional.

My formal training includes a plethora of biology, anatomy and physiology, ecology, and much more. I also lived in Mexico for six months and am available as a Spanish tutor, as well. I am passionate about all of the subjects that I have studied in my academic career, and I am excited to share that enthusiasm with students to help them excel!

I believe that students learn best when they are inspired and able to see the real-world applications of their studies. I hope to generate genuine curiosity in my tutoring, so that students leave not only informed but also inspired.

I have taken advanced science classes at the undergraduate and graduate level, spanning from chemistry and biology, to genetics, evolution, ecology, animal behavior, zoology, and more. I have excelled in these studies and have worked as a Teaching Assistant for both Biology I and Functional Vertebrate Anatomy and Physiology. I have worked in the field as a wildlife biologist and for a variety of conservation organizations. Having designed and completed scientific studies and analyses in my career, I can both tutor and inspire students of the life sciences.

I spent six months living in Mexico and speaking Spanish on a daily basis. I have over 5 years of formal Spanish instruction, including an advanced class at the undergraduate level.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I regularly incorporate social science methods (coding, qualitative analysis) in my research and work as a conservationist. I have taught these methods to college students that I have interned, as well as to colleagues at my organization. I have created and analyzed surveys, been approved by the institutional review boards of two colleges for my anthropological data collection methods, conducted in-depth life interviews, and coded a variety of materials. I regularly use the writings of anthropologists in my publications, including Geertz, Haraway, and Raffles. I also presented a poster at an anthropology conference for archival coding research. My undergraduate classes included field ethnography and anthropological theory.

Genetics

I was a Teaching Assistant for college-level Biology I, which consisted primarily of genetics. Topics taught included DNA structure, cell replication (mitosis and meiosis), translation, transcription, epigenetics, ethical questions surrounding GMOs, and more. I excelled in my undergraduate classes of biology, genetics, molecular biology, and evolution. I also took a short course on developmental biology at a genetics lab.

Microsoft Access

I have created multiple databases on Microsoft Access, and have tutored colleagues in how to create and manage their own databases. I also have experiencing using Microsoft Access WebApps (which are cloud-based). I am familiar with integrated database hosting and open-source options including PostSQL. I would be very comfortable teaching anyone how to make a database in Microsoft Access.

Needlework

I have been crocheting for 20 years and knitting for 10 years. My completed projects include hats, scarves, blankets, stockings, and more. I have taught many friends how to both crochet and knit, and I would be comfortable and confident teaching anyone these skills. I teach by example, by starting projects with my students and slowly walking them through the various stitches and methods.

Zoology

I'm currently in a Master's program studying wildlife conservation. Undergraduate classes included mammalogy, biology II, functional vertebrate anatomy and phys., marine biology, animal behavior, and others. I'm an active zoology professional and have been a Teaching Assistant in Biology I and Functional Vert. Anatomy and Phys; I have also interned undergrad students at a conservation organization.
