About Kevin

I love math and solving problems using math. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, earning outstanding grades while being challenged in all kinds of theoretical and practical math subjects.

I have spent a great deal of time assisting my kids (and my wife for that matter) in math courses and standardized test preparation. I enjoy trying to present math concepts in a unique manner to try to connect with the student. Textbooks usually only present a problem in one manner and that one size fits all approach simply doesn't work for everyone. I also have experience in teaching a unique program for Dyslexia called Audiblox. We used this program with one of our children with excellent results.

I have an Engineering education including 3 levels of calculus where I received a grade of 4.0 in all three. I also have 20+ years of experience applying math in real world business environments through my Engineering assignments.

Please contact me to assist in "turning on the light" for students that are struggling with math concepts or practical application.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have strong math skills that were developed by a Mechanical Engineering curriculum in college. I tutored my three children through high school and college math as well as helping my wife prepare for the graduate school exam. I recently started tutoring in Algebra and other math subjects. I like to emphasize two things in my tutoring; 1. An understanding of why the concept works 2. Using methods of double checking answers whenever possible.

College Counseling

I am a weekly volunteer at a career resource center where I assist job searchers with career assessment, job search tools, skill assessment, identifying training opportunities, and resume preparation. I was also a formal mentor and trainer for numerous entry level college students joining the workforce for the first time. As part of this process I designed and monitored customized training programs for these individuals. I also have experience with math and general SAT tutoring for high school students preparing for college.

Microsoft Access

I have used Microsoft Access actively over the past 15 years (starting with Access 97) to solve a variety of business problems. This has included using it to build a multi-user maintenance tracking application that was used for 10 years and a daily schedule forecasting system. I am well versed in the creation of forms, tables, data relationships, queries, custom reports, macros, VBA code. Much of the work in have done also involved automated data import and export.

Microsoft Excel

I have 25 plus years of experience using Excel on the job for analysis, reporting, and problem solving.
