About Chris

I have a PhD from Lehigh University. I spent six years as a teacher assistant during graduate school, and I have been an adjunct instructor at a community college and a four-year-college in the past. My ultimate goal is to teach and do active research in a four-year institution.

Knowing the material is only half the battle. I have learned that as educators we must also find ways to present the information in a pedagogical manner, and accustomed to the means of the learning ability of the student. Different methods work for different students, and one must really get a pulse on the student's comprehension as well as perspectives on the subject content. Once I see where the student is, and get a fairly reasonable idea of how the student approaches mathematics, I try my best to accommodate the student's needs.

Teaching is also a learning experience for the teacher, as no two individuals think exactly alike. Other factors such as past history with other teachers come in to play as well. It's a very powerful feeling knowing that you have reached the student, and as the student becomes less intimidated by the material and his/her confidence grows, the sessions begin to run more smoothly. Breaking the ice in the early going is always the roughest part for the student and the teacher, yet a challenge nonetheless.

If your troubles lie in mathematics, look no further. I am flexible, and sessions during evenings and weekends can be arranged.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
