In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught reading to small groups for K-5th grade. I'm certified for ESL K-12, so I have done language arts including English, phonics, and reading comprehension at the elementary level. Comprehension is so important for the student to have success in all the other subjects.

I have more than 20 years experience teaching ESL and Spanish. Reading is a core component for any subject. Without reading comprehension any subject could be difficult to understand. The strategies used for becoming a better reader can then be applied to various subjects for more success.
I have been interested in Spanish since I was in middle school. When in college, I lived in Spain for a semester and did a lot of traveling. Also I lived in Spain for a month a year ago. Spanish is spoken in so many countries in the world that it is important for business and traveling. Learning another language can help one with vocabulary and grammar in the native language.
Writng is very fundamental for all subjects including descriptions and responses for math problems. The schools strive to have more writing skills so the students can succeed
on PSSA and other tests. This skill carries over into college and beyond in business.
