Hi, I'm Betsey! I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees in physics and engineering with minors in math, and I've always loved both learning and teaching. I've been professionally tutoring in-person since 2009 and online since 2014. When I first began tutoring, I was confident in my own understanding of math topics at all levels, but I knew there was more to teaching than being able to complete math tasks on my own. I spent months looking into pedagogy and teaching techniques to really understand how to give my students true comprehension of and curiosity about the subject rather than simply teaching them how to complete an assignment and cram for a test.
In my tutoring now, I use research-backed Growth Mindset and Mathematical Mindset perspectives and methods to turn students into mathematicians. Giving students the reassurance that “real mathematicians” make mistakes all the time, and that it’s a necessary part of learning helps them develop the perseverance and curiosity to learn concepts deeply, see connections, and retain knowledge better from year to year. As an added benefit, teaching from this perspective prevents and reduces the math anxiety that many students develop when they struggle (or see others struggle) with math concepts.
I work part time in a local public school, and while I enjoy the classroom atmosphere, tutoring 1-on-1 is one of my passions. I love seeing the spark of understanding in a student’s eyes as they grasp a difficult concept. One of the joys of tutoring is viewing the material from my student’s perspective and finding new insights and methods as I teach. I tailor each session for the specific student, which means I need to be able to read my student’s level of understanding, and sometimes I need to develop new visuals on the fly. This was originally difficult to implement in an online session, but due to the many benefits of online tutoring, I felt like I really needed to find a way. I have worked for years to make my online tutoring feel more like in-person tutoring, and th

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra I is one of the subjects I have the most experience tutoring. I teach from a Mathematical Mindsets perspective, and I use a multisensory approach when I feel it will benefit the student. I’ve tutored students from many school districts, and I have experience tutoring to supplement a variety of math curriculums. The skills learned in Algebra I will be revisited throughout high school math, and I teach with the aim of deep understanding and good concept retention.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra II is one of the subjects I have the most experience tutoring. I teach from a Mathematical Mindsets perspective, and I use a multisensory approach when I feel it will benefit the student. I’ve tutored students from many school districts, and I have experience tutoring to supplement a variety of math curriculums. Algebra II builds on skills learned in previous high school math courses, and I teach with the aim of seeing connections to previously learned concepts and developing deep understanding.
Calculus,

Calculus

I’ve tutored both high school and college level calculus, including test prep for the AP and CLEP exams. Many students who have previously excelled in math classes struggle with calculus and lose confidence in their math abilities. I teach from a Mathematical Mindsets perspective and work to help students see this struggle as productive. For many of my students, learning calculus deeply despite setbacks is the experience that gives them confidence in their ability to grow beyond their perceived limits.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is one of the subjects I have the most experience tutoring. I teach from a Mathematical Mindsets perspective, and I use a multisensory approach when I feel it will benefit the student. I’ve tutored students from many school districts, and I have experience tutoring to supplement a variety of math curriculums. The skills learned in Prealgebra will be revisited throughout middle school and high school math, and I teach with the aim of deep understanding and good concept retention.
