The University of Oregon (Japanese)
School for International Training (Master's)
Hello potential students!! My name is Gennie and I have been a very fun and creative ESL, English and Japanese language teacher for many years! Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have been living in Japan for the past couple of decades and speak the language fluently. I taught at several Universities and colleges in Tokyo for over 20 years after I received my Master's degree from the School for International Training in Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language. I also owned and ran an English language school for 15 years, teaching English to children from 1st grade through 9th grade. I have pictures of my school if you'd like to see them! I have taught all four English skills, listening, reading, speaking and writing. I assess a student's level and then use a variety of interesting and creative worksheets and one on one activities to help a student learn or improve in the area needed in English or Japanese. I have also taught pronunciation, comparative culture and test taking skills for the TOEFL, TOEIC, Eiken (Step test) or SAT. My extended experience in teaching lessons for one student or a hundred has prepared me to use a variety of methods to help students improve in any area of English or Japanese.
I recently returned to Portland to enjoy the beautiful nature and lovely rain ;-) here. I would like to teach or tutor students who need help in English or would like to learn Japanese. I love teaching and am a very animated and sometimes funny teacher. I have kept in touch with many of my former students who are my treasure. I hope to get to know you and help you with your studies! I'd be happy to negotiate the rate depending on the distance/hours I would have to travel/teach. For lessons with two or more students, the rates/hour will be 1/2 the cost for each student.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Taught ESL at a college for 22 years. I also taught ESL students from ages 6 to 18 at my own school.
I grew up in Oregon however, I have lived in Japan for over three decades, including parts of my childhood. I majored in Japanese language and literature at the University of Oregon and studied for one year at Waseda University in Tokyo. I also have a master's degree and studied different methodology in teaching English which I can adapt to teaching Japanese. I have had more than two decades of teaching experience. I'll prepare enjoyable lessons to learn Japanese.
