Bio

My name is Blake, and I use they/them pronouns. I graduated summa cum laude from Boston Conservatory at Berklee in 2020 majoring in Music Composition. I've worked in educational, community, regional, and professional theaters as a composer, music director, and pianist since 2012. I'm also a 5-star teacher on Outschool, where I've taught classes on songwriting, music theory, audition prep, and mathematics since 2020. I'm also a 5-star teacher on Outschool, where I've taught classes on songwriting, music theory, audition prep, and mathematics since 2020. I've also taught private music lessons in songwriting, voice, and piano since 2013. One of my dreams is to become a community college math teacher, so I'm pursuing an MS in Mathematics at Portland State University. I took prerequisites in Statistics, Discrete Math, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, Differential Equations, and Real Analysis in order to qualify. Plus, I have tutored math since the fall of 2021, and have helped my students understand difficult concepts, receive higher grades, and get into honors math.

Whether it's music or math, I love to teach. My favorite sound is an "Ohh!" after a student finally understands a concept. I believe in leading and teaching with encouragement, while challenging students to help them meet their goals. Private lessons are about the student and their needs, and I prioritize these first and foremost. During lessons, I constantly adjust my approach according to my student's learning style. When tutoring math and music theory, I offer homework help, concept review, test prep, and custom practice problems. These tutoring sessions are quite hands on with multiple opportunities for the student to engage in guided practice of the concepts they have learned. When teaching private music lessons, I will help students achieve their musical and professional aspirations while ensuring they have a strong basic foundation.

If you need help with math and/or music, I'm here to help! Feel free to message me if you have any questions or want to schedule a lesson, and I will get back to you as quickly as possible. Thank you, and I look forward to working with you

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I am going into an MS in Math at Portland State University. Most of my tutoring experience thus far is in tutoring Algebra 1, so I have a good idea of what is in a typical Algebra 1 curriculum. Algebra 1 is an important foundation for all of the math I have done since, so I know the subject very well.
Calculus,

Calculus

I am going into an MS in Mathematics at Portland State University. To get into this program, I have had to take the whole calculus sequence, Differential Equations, and Real Analysis, which all involve a lot of calculus. I received an average grade of an A in all of these courses, and I got a 5 on the AP Calculus AB test in high school. Now I am learning more about Real Analysis, which is the theory behind calculus. This helps me understand Calculus more deeply, which makes it easier to explain difficult concepts.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

PreCalculus is one of my favorite math subjects, and has served as a strong foundation for my continued work in mathematics. As someone starting an MS in Mathematics who has taken advanced proof-based courses, I still use concepts from PreCalculus regularly.
Algebra 2, Geometry, Prealgebra, Statistics
