In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

If you are preparing to take the PSAT, I will use that time to help you understand the structure of the SAT. I can help a student understand the basic tenants of psychology, so that he can identify the techniques of early psychotherapists, explain their intended purpose, and how they effected patients during that era.
Each of the early psychologists hoped to make a lasting contribution to the study of psychology. However some techniques are no longer used while others have stood the test of time. Freud, one of the most influential and controversial psychotherapists, had an everlasting impact on psychology. However, some techniques he used to treat patients are considered to be ludicrous while others are still being used by contemporary psychotherapists.
Psychology is not an exact science but a culmination of theories that are used in attempt to understand human behavior. Studying psychology can help you learn about the birth of psychology, but it also can provide a glimpse of the complexity of the human mind and how it effects our behavior.

You will have to make tough choices when you are faced with problems that contain a word that you are unfamiliar with.
I will also help you develop your skills in approaching reading passages. You will have to manage your time well. If you are running short on time, you may be forced to read a long passage and answer questions in a relatively short amount of time. On each SAT,there are certain grammar skills that are repeatedly asked every year. However, they frame the questions in different ways, so that it can make it difficult to find the error. I will help you to identify those rules, so that you can find some mistakes quickly. This may even give you more time to answer questions that may be more complex.
Many students can identify mistakes in word usage just by reading the passage to themselves and comparing it to our everyday speech. When you read the sentence, it just sounds 'wrong' to you. However, that can work against you when you find sentences that sound 'right' to you.
You need to remember that grammar rules are often broken in our every day speech. It can be such a common occurrence that it is rare for even one person to use proper grammar. I will help you identify sentences that sound grammatically correct, but on careful consideration you will find that the sentences do contain errors. Whenever you find yourself wanting to fill in the bubble that says that there is no error, you will want to double check your work and be absolutely certain that you did not fail to identify the error.

As a writing tutor, I can help students develop skills that will help them write focused and well organized essays. Writing an essay is essentially a matter of making good choices and joining together thoughts that are closely connected to one another.
A well-written essay is created when a student learns to master a series of skills that when joined together create one cohesive thought. A student's ability to organize thoughts will directly correlate to their success in academic writing.
A student must be taught how to focus the essay on one central concept and how to use paragraphs to break apart elements of that central concept to create connected thought that explain the concept. Understanding how to do this can be very difficult for young writers but with practice they can learn to keep each portion of their essay focused.
The ability to structure sentences is just as important as learning how to choose a topic and write paragraphs that are directly related to the topic. The ability to use periods, commas, and semi-colons will help the writer learn how to combine an opinion or thought with a supporting detail. This is important because students who use only use simple sentences tend to see each sentence as a separate expression rather than a connection of ideas. Once they begin learn how to combine sentences, they develop the ability to combine their own thoughts with a piece of supporting evidence or an important detail.
Each student works at their own pace. More advanced writers can learn different techniques. I will try to determine the pace of the lesson plans by looking at a student's age, skill level, and personality. Some students thrive by trying different techniques at the same time. However, other students can become overwhelmed and discouraged if they have to try to think about a new concept before they have mastered the first concept.
I believe it is essential for every student to know that he has the potential to become a proficient writer. Writing does not come naturally but is a skill learned over time. Even the most esteemed writers spend a great amount of time perfecting their craft.
I believe the purpose of helping a student learn to write is to give them the ability to express themselves in the written word. It allows them to share ideas and thoughts in a way that is different from conversation.
