Hi! I'm Emma! I graduated from Dartmouth College in June of 2019 with my B.A. in Linguistics and am currently a first year PhD student in Linguistics at the University of Oregon. My whole life has revolved around studying, documenting, and teaching language ever since high school. I discovered how much I loved studying French and Arabic both in school and in my spare time and started wondering about their structures, and I have been totally addicted to linguistics ever since. My first tutoring job was in high school, teaching math to underprivileged kids in DC. Since then, I have shifted over to teaching language: I taught advanced English in a Tokyo cram school the summer after my first year of college, I co-taught first year French for my sophomore, junior, and senior years at Dartmouth, and I spent the year after college teaching English at two rural French high schools.

I love teaching language because of the unique experience every language-teaching job provides; I have been able to experiment with different teaching styles and work with people from different cultures and with different learning styles, allowing me to expand my abilities both as a language lover and as a teacher/tutor. I majored in Linguistics at Dartmouth, and for my PhD in Linguistics I am working on language documentation in Papua New Guinea. My experience with linguistics, language documentation, learning French and Arabic myself as a student, and working with students of different ages and skillsets in multiple foreign countries allow me to be a highly adaptable and skilled tutor in both language and linguistics and to convey genuine excitement about language to every student I work with. I really love language and I hope I can help you love it too!

French

French

I have taught French and English as foreign languages for five years now. I started working at a cram school in Tokyo teaching English the summer after my freshman year of college. I then began teaching introductory French at Dartmouth College during my sophomore, junior, and senior years there. Since graduating in June 2019, I have been teaching English at a vocational high school in the small town of Thiers, France. I have a wide array of experience as well as an academic background in linguistics, all making me a strong language teacher.

Linguistics,

Linguistics

I graduated from Dartmouth College in June 2019 with my B.A. in Linguistics, having taken every upper-level class in the department. Though I never tutored linguistics for pay while in undergrad (I was busy teaching French), I tutored countless people in linguistics in my free time and have been tutoring ling on Wyzant to keep up my teaching skills. I am currently in my first year of a PhD program in Linguistics at the University of Oregon, working on documentation and analysis of languages of the Rai Coast of Papua New Guinea. My main areas of interest are in fieldwork, semantics, and morphosyntax, but I also have experience in phonology, morphology, historical linguistics, phonetics, and typology.
Writing

Writing

I have always loved to write and help others with their writing. As a graduate student, I have extensive experience with academic writing. My work in linguistics has made me especially aware of the effects of structure and vocabulary choices on how we convey ideas. I would be grateful to get to work with you!

Arabic,

Arabic

I have studied Arabic in intensive immersive environments such as Middlebury Monterey Language Academy (summers 2013 and 2014) and Qasid Arabic Institute in Amman, Jordan (summer 2018) as well as in more traditional classroom settings at Dartmouth College. I have been teaching language for four years now, and, while I do not believe I would be a good tutor for anyone looking to specialize in Arabic dialect, I have excellent understanding of the grammar of Fusha and plenty of experience working with people at the 2nd year college level and under. If you need help with beginner/intermediate Arabic, I am an excellent resource.
