I am a High School and College tutor with over five years experience tutoring in a wide range of subjects. I received my B.A. in English and Political Science from the University of Oregon in 2014. As an undergraduate, I gained tutoring experience as a volunteer tutor in local middle and high schools. After graduating, I became the coordinator of the tutoring center at my former high school. In this role, I continue to tutor students in all academic subjects, while also supervising and training peer tutors. I am also currently pursuing my Master's degree in teaching, along with a teaching license with endorsements in English Language Arts and Social Studies.

My primary academic interests have carried over from my undergraduate work. That is, I still relish the opportunity to tutor students in writing, literary studies, and social studies (especially Government and US History). Though these are my primary academic passions, I've developed an interest in studying and tutoring high school math subjects as well.

I truly love working with students and the opportunity to witness them "get it" when working on something they were struggling with. My main goal as a tutor is to facilitate such moments of understanding, rather than to simply give the answers. My experience has taught me that this is a far more productive and lasting form of learning. While some students can become frustrated with this approach initially, I've found that they almost always appreciate this method of education in the end, once they realize how much better they understand the concepts and feel that sense of confidence that comes with achieving mastery by their own efforts.

Writing and literary studies have been areas of continued fascination, study, and growth for me personally. While my undergraduate degree in English has equipped me with the necessary skills and background to provide exceptional tutoring services in this area, it is really my lifelong love of literature and the practice of writing that I believe set me apart. I will bring both the skills and a great deal of enthusiasm to any tutoring session, with an emphasis on bolstering student confidence and critical thinking skills.

As a Political Science major in college, I developed a strong understanding of US and world governments, the study of which involved a great deal of historical study as well. Further, as something of a history buff, I spend much of my free time reading and taking classes on American history and government. I love the opportunities I get while tutoring to have engaging discussions with my students about historical and political concepts and events. I believe the best way to really learn concepts in these social sciences is to have discussions like these--the kinds of discussions that lead to connections and deeper understanding, rather than an emphasis on rote memorization of dates and names.

If you think I could be of help to you in your studies, please don't hesitate to contact me and inquire about what services I can offer you. Besides my enthusiasm for my subjects, you can count on me to be honest, encouraging, and understanding. School is hard, but I'm here to help however I can!

Literature,

Literature

The study of literature has been my primary passion since I was a high school student, and my love for the subject has only grown through my undergraduate program in English and my voracious reading habits. I have a considerable background in studying and tutoring a solid majority of the "big texts" that students tend to encounter in middle and high school and have developed many techniques and strategies for engaging students with these classic works of literature. This knack for literary analysis, coupled with my skills in tutoring writing, has equipped me with the necessary tools to help students succeed in their own literary studies--and even guide them toward a real, personal appreciation for reading and analyzing great writing.

While pursuing my BA in English, I tutored middle school students in all subjects, with a special focus on writing, grammar, and proofreading. Upon completing my degree, I began tutoring high school students, again focusing on tutoring writing, literature, and other humanities. Further, I have significant experience tutoring writing at all levels--including college students--as an online tutor.

Government & Politics,

Government & Politics

I received my BA in English and Political Science in 2014. Since completing my degree, I have tutored middle school, high school, and college students in a wide range of social sciences. My areas of specific expertise are in American politics, functions of government, and political theory/philosophy. The majority of my tutoring experience in Government and Politics has come through online tutoring platforms; however, I have a considerable background in one-on-one, in-person tutoring in this field as well.
Philosophy,

Philosophy

My entry to philosophy was initially through the study of political philosophy as an undergraduate Political Science major. Since then, I have spend hundreds of hours studying philosophy on my own through books, online courses, and other resources. I also have 6 years of tutoring experience, a good amount of which was in philosophy.
Social Studies,

Social Studies

While my undergraduate degree was in Political Science, the program relied heavily on a keen understanding and in-depth study of political history, sociology, and economics. Beyond my undergraduate coursework and tutoring experience (for middle school, high school, and college students), I also spend a considerable amount of my leisure time expanding my knowledge and understanding of social sciences through self-study. I have taken 20+ online courses in social sciences from some of the top universities in the country, and continue to add to the breadth of my knowledge in this field as an avid reader of books on history, politics, philosophy, and sociology.
