About Benton

I am currently a high school science teacher. I have Biology and Physical Science classes, but I also am passionate about the world around us such as zoology and botany. I enjoy working with all ages and my goal is to help my students succeed and learn in fun and exciting ways. I have 3 fish tanks loaded with fish, poison dart frogs, a gopher snake named Tony, mealworms and hopefully soon; redworms for composting, all in my classroom that my students love and I refer to these creatures and talk about them in class often and how they pertain to science.

I am very involved at the school I teach at, coaching soccer and track & field. I also attend most home sporting events, dramas, and concerts! In college I ran the 800meters in track and played the alto saxophone in concert band as well as a saxophone quintet! When I pursued my masters in Education I participated in intramural sports such as volleyball, soccer, and basketball. Now I play city league volleyball, indoor soccer, and enjoy doing the occasional triathlon.

Biology: Subject taught at the high school level as well as an undergrad degree.

Botany: Passionate about plants, trees, and the gymnosperms/angiosperms that surround our daily lives and understanding their vascular and non-vascular systems. Botany focused elective classes in college.

Ecology: How species interact with each other, relationships, biotic and abiotic factors and how animals and plants help each other everyday! Using creatures around us to help us and solve problems with nature just like organisms do to solve their problems.

Physical Science: Class I've taught to my high schoolers for the last 3 years and this includes aspects of chemistry, earth science, physics and some math.

Zoology: Investigating the animal world, classifications, the animal body, phyla and taxonomy, and animal behaviors and how they work and operate!

I look forward to hearing and helping from the students of our next generation! Even if you're going back to school for a second career or pursuing your dreams, I want to help you accomplish these dreams and goals! SCIENCE!!!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I have played basketball growing up, worked with high schoolers and ran stats for many many basketball games. Getting young ones or athletes more interested in the game is the goal. Practices, drills and workouts for the basketball athlete for all ages.

Bible Studies

Took a few religious studies classes and have read and studied the bible for 21 years. Read the bible almost daily. I have many different bible versions to help answer questions and dig deeper into the scriptures and help people understand what The bible is referring tom talking about or explain the parable or verse that is being discusses at the time.

Biology

I have a Biology degree and have taught the subject for 3+ years now. Covering topics from Cells and Classifications to DNA to RNA and many more. Students need help with structures, study tools, diagrams, and general memorization to succeed at this subject.

Botany

I took 3 college classes under the Botany Umbrella.
-Woody Plants
-Medicinal Plants
-Plants and Society
I also teach Botany in my biology classes at the high school level.

General Music

I have played saxophone and been involved in many musical performances for the last 12 years.

Physical Science

I have a college education in science and have my teaching license for Physical Science. I have taught the subject in Oregon for 3 years. Science is a challenging subject that can be made easy by using real world examples and individuals just need to be introduced to science in a fun way.

Saxophone

Played Saxophone for 12 years. Played in college on a scholarship. Have taken private lessons.

Soccer

I was a high school soccer athlete. I also coach soccer at the high school level and play indoor soccer frequently.

Study Skills

I teach a study skills class at the high school level. I know many strategies and I teach my Freshmen these as often as I can! Concept maps, flash cards, Quizlet which is a free online quiz program, vocabulary practice strategies, an many more ways to get study skills and habits perfected for school and life!

Track & Field

High school athlete. College athlete. Understand strategies such as peaking, safety and practice routines. Also coached at the high school level for 3 years. Enjoy helping young athletes pursue and achieve what they want in a sport they love.

Zoology

Zoology is often touched upon in Biology. I have many live organisms in my classroom I reference and discuss and this is zoology at its finest. Real life examples. I teach a Zoology class at the high school level and cover many different phyla and taxonomies of the different species. Zoology is great for students interested in the real world around them or want to learn more and dig deeper! This is a passionate subject of mine!!!
