About Dee Ann

I am a former classroom teacher (certified in CA) with over 10 years of experience teaching both Kindergarten and first grade. I am passionate about reading and love finding creative ways to teach and reinforce new skills. I take a whole language approach to teaching reading, incorporating phonics, writing, speaking, listening, and reading GOOD literature. Children learn best by doing and that is also true in learning Math. I have found in my teaching over the years that no single curricula fits all my needs, and so I pull from the best of what I have used in my classroom. I utilize manipulatives, singing, patterning, chalkboards, and clay, to name a few, to teach Math in a fun and challenging way.

I enjoy working one-on-one with students to help them realize their full academic potential. I have a great rapport with children and my joy in teaching is to see young people become life-long learners and lovers of reading!

I use phonics and a multi-sensory approach to reading. Building vocabulary makes students better writers, and I have used Wordly Wise in developing better vocabulary. I have hosted Chinese exchange students for the past two years which provided me with opportunities to stretch myself as a Language Arts teacher.

I have taught penmanship for 10+ years at the Kindergarten and first grade level. I have attended workshops to learn Getty Dubay Italics, D'Nelian, and block script. I use a variety of methods to teach penmanship as I believe it is an important first step in becoming a thoughtful writer.

I have been trained to teach The Writing Road to Reading, Spell to Read and Write, as well as Zoo Phonics. I have utilized these curricula in my classroom with a great deal of success.

I enjoy working with new students and look forward to learning more together with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have been a teacher in a self-contained classroom at a Christian school and have taught Bible for 6 years. I have been a student of the Bible and continue my education daily!

Elementary Science

As an elementary school teacher I found exciting and engaging ways to teach science in my classroom. I have over 10 years of experience at the elementary level and even taught Apologia Science to my own child while she was in middle school.

English

I can help students learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas. This will promote the literacy skills and concepts required for academic and professional success throughout their lifetimes.

Grammar

Call me old fashioned, but I am passionate about grammar! The use of proper grammar in writing and speaking is essential for academic and professional success. I teach basic fundamentals of grammar to make students polished speakers and writers.

Handwriting

I have taught penmanship in my classrooms for over 10 years. I have attended workshops to teach Getty Dubay Italiacs and D'Nelian.

Literature

I have a passion for reading and love to engage elementary and middle school students in discussions about great books. I am well-read myself and find it rewarding to help students to use critical thinking skills to connect with literature on a deeper level.

Phonics

I have taught phonics in my classroom for over 10 years. I have been trained in Zoo Phonics, The Writing Road to Reading, and Spell to Read and Write. I have used all three programs in my classroom with verifiable success.

Reading

I have taught reading in a self contained elementary classroom for over 10 years and have been tutoring students in reading for the past 5 years. I have taken Wanda Sanseri's Spell to Write and Read course and used it in my Kindergarten classroom for 6 years. I approach reading using phonics, spelling, and writing and even use a kinesthetic program called Zoo Phonics. As a matter of verifiable qualification, I obtained a multiple subject credential in the state of California in 1991 and was granted licensure to teach K-12 in a self contained classroom.

Spelling

I teach writing using a process Spell to Write and Read which was developed by Wanda Sanseri. Rather than merely memorizing words, as in traditional spelling programs, I teach students to analyze the reasons behind a word’s spelling and pronunciation, giving them a strategy to learn any word they encounter. Reading is a natural outgrowth of spelling instruction.

Vocabulary

I obtained a multiple subject credential in the state of California in 1991 and was granted licensure to teach K-12 in a self contained classroom.

My most recent classroom experience was teaching 6 years of Kindergarten at a school in Newberg, OR.

Writing

I help students to develop stronger sentences, more fluid paragraphs, and persuasive essays. With my expertise in Grammar, Spelling, and English I can work with students to become more eloquent writers. I have taught writing at the elementary level for over 10 years and have recently been instructing individually middle school and high school students wishing to become more proficient writers.

Excellent tutoring experience-- Very helpful!

We were looking for someone to give our son more confidence and make learning to read more fun. Dee Ann did an excellent job engaging with our 5 year old and has a lot of ways to help reach our goals. He really enjoyed his time with her, and was still talking about it this evening! Off to a great start!
