My name is Karie, and I have worked with children of all ages since I was a child myself. At 10 years old, neighbors would drop their kids off for me to babysit. In college, I went on to get my degree in Education and adored teaching 4th/5th grade for 5 years. During the summers, I have worked with students at camps and taught them the fine art of cooking for 6 summers in a row. Finally, throughout my high school, college, and post-college years, I have worked professionally as a Nanny for numerous families.
To say I "get kids" is an understatement; I understand their developmental stages from birth through the elementary years, having experienced it both as a Nanny and as their teacher. When teaching a child a new concept or one they are struggling to understand, I approach it with the belief that they can and will be successful. I expect them to work hard, and I do not give out answers, rather lead them to discover the answers on their own. I adore working with children, as each day can be so different from the last.
In my free time, I love being outdoors. From growing an organic garden to taking my camera out on photo shoots, to scrapbooking, to listening to music, to spending quality time with my husband, I enjoy life to its fullest. It is my hope to pass on my passionate nature to the students I work with. My name is Karie, and I have worked with children of all ages since I was a child myself. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Throughout my years as a teacher, I was required to teach art in various forms to my students. I have learned how to teach art appreciation to children, as well as art replication, art as an expression, and art composition.
I received my Teaching Credentials in the state of CA for K-12th grade, multiple subject. I have taught for 5 years, and also have experience as a tutor.
I have worked with students who have ranged from non-English speaking to native English speaking. I have worked with them in the classroom setting, as a tutor, as well as someone to come alongside of them to encourage simple conversation and learning. I am patient, I speak slowly and clearly, and I love meeting and learning about people from other cultures!
I studied Photography in college, taking 3 leveled courses over the course of 2 years. I have then gone on to continue the practice and small business of being a photographer.
Teaching in private schools for 5 years, I had to work with my students in teaching them the best habits of study. I believe good studying takes place in an environment conducive of learning, and that organization and materials can make or break a student's ability to succeed.
