About Belinda

After 17 years of classroom teaching, tutoring is a great way to share what I've learned. Primary and intermediate students are wonderful to work with because their growth is broad at this age. I have many games, manipulatives, and resources to help students learn and want my students to enjoy the experience of learning because it increases the amount that is learned and how long it is retained. I do not believe that there is one "right" way to teach a subject or to create that wonderful "ah-ha" moment.

During my many years of teaching, I attended many workshops to give me the latest approaches to teaching math, reading, and writing. Some of these included, Marcy Cook math, Rebecca Sitton Spelling, and John Sheflebine Phonics Reading. Each of these individuals is a leader in their field. Over the years, I have even developed my own phonics curriculum.

I was always selected to be one of my district's pilot teachers where I tested the latest approaches to teaching. I was a BTSA (Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment) provider for many years. This meant I was constantly working with and mentoring new teachers. This also exposed me to the latest thinking about the art of teaching. I was also the GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) coordinator for our school for ten years. I tested students and learned much about differentiated instruction, molding instruction to fit the learning style of the student.

I have many written observations of my teaching praising my techniques and interactions with students. I have letters of recommendations from the principals for whom I worked and many letters and notes from parents.

I believe all students can learn, that we are all on a continuum of what I call our "learning journey" and that if a teacher meets a student where they are on that journey, he/she can be successfully moved along.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

As an elementary classroom teacher for seventeen years, I have worked with hundreds of students in all subjects. I also tutored small groups of students after school in both reading and math. I have kept many of the teaching resource materials from my years of teaching and use them to enhance the learning experience in my current tutoring work. These include games, books, manipulatives, and activities that make learning more interesting and fun for the student. That, in turn, deepens the learning.

Elementary Math

I taught elementary school for more than 17 years. When I retired, I was able to keep many of the resource materials I accumulated over the years. I have many books, games, activities, and hands-on manipulatives (especially important in understanding math concepts). They are designed to make learning interesting and enjoyable. I believe in meeting a student where they are in their learning and finding what works for them to grasp a concept. I have successfully tutored students after school throughout my career.

Phonics

Most of my seventeen years of classroom teaching was in grades 1 - 3. These formative years focus on learning to read. I attended many workshops and pilot programs and became my school's "expert" on phonics instruction, developing my own system over the years. I have kept all of my phonics work and enjoy sharing it with students learning to become better readers.

Reading

Reading was always my passion as a teacher. Enabling students to become readers for the first time or better readers with greater comprehension and love for reading are the best part of teaching. I have attended many, many workshops and ongoing classes to keep my skills and knowledge at a very high level. Over the years, it has been very satisfying working with students on a one-on-one basis, in addition to my classroom career. I have been able to use many of my resources-- books, games, activities to help students achieve their goals.
