About Jennifer

¡Hola! My name is Jennifer and I've been a bilingual teacher for 17 years! I've taught students of every age, from infant and toddler through adult (and every grade in between, K-12), and I hope to meet many wonderful new students through this website! I started out my teaching career as a substitute in various schools here in Salem-Keizer, especially the bilingual elementary schools. These last eight years, I taught full-time in Woodburn, in 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade classrooms--with instruction (in all subjects) delivered in Spanish and English (50/50). I also spent some time teaching ESL in Chemeketa Community College's "English Now!" program in the evenings. I have a Bachelor's degree in Cross-Cultural Studies and Linguistics (double major) and also have my Elementary Teaching Credential (K-8) with Early Childhood, English as a Second Language, and Spanish endorsements.

What needs do you have that I might be able to help you with? Are term papers stressing you out? Editing papers is one of my specialties: I can guide you through the whole writing process from pre-write to final copy, and even help you have fun in the process! I can help you learn to create stories, expository or persuasive essays, or even poetry that you can be proud of, in English or Spanish.

Is your son or daughter's Common Core math driving you crazy? I've been in the trenches teaching it day in and day out, often with students who struggle with math and have various learning challenges, and have reveled in those moments of seeing kids' faces light up when they suddenly "get it"! Breaking down concepts in simple, easy-to-understand ways is something I truly enjoy.

Is reading something that is difficult for your child? Is it like pulling teeth to get her or him to read? I can understand your student's challenges and how they might feel about reading, since I myself struggled with grasping the concepts when I was in 1st grade, but eventually rose to be one of the top readers in my 2nd grade class and am now a major lifelong bookworm. As a teacher, I consistently led students to reach or even exceed their reading growth goals. It takes a lot of hard work on the part of the teacher and the student, and I have the passion and dedication to make it happen!

I look forward to meeting and working with you or your child! It would be my pleasure to help you learn Spanish or brush up on any aspect of English (conversation, grammar, reading, writing), math (Common Core, elementary math, algebra), basic computing, or Psychology. I'd be happy to help you prepare for a test, improve your grades, increase your confidence, or reach any other goal that you have! Let's do this! I could even teach you to play the violin if you're interested in music. My schedule is pretty open and flexible, and I'd be happy to meet with you at my home or yours, or tutor you in a neutral location such as a coffee shop. Can't wait to hear from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught many students over the years who have been diagnosed with ADD and ADHD (some of these managed their symptoms with medication and some didn't). I understand (in detail) what the symptoms are and how they can affect learning and study habits, and I also know some strategies for helping alleviate many of them. I seem to click with kids who have ADD and have a natural rapport with them. I have taught elementary school full-time for 8 years.

Common Core

I have a teaching credential in elementary education (K-8) with endorsements in ECE, ESOL, and Spanish. I have taught elementary school full-time for 8 years. At my school, we taught to the Common Core standards and used Common Core curriculum, especially in reading, writing, and math. Ever since the implementation of the CCSSs, I hear a lot of parents talk about their frustrations with understanding their children's math homework, and I would enjoy helping them and their child make some sense out of it, demystify it a bit & break it down for them, and help them to gain confidence and success in reaching the standards!

Cooking

I love to cook, and people have told me they love to eat the foods that I create for them! I do well with a variety of types of cooking, from following a recipe to the letter, to finding a decent recipe and tweaking it to fit my needs or mood (or the ingredients on hand), to getting creative and enjoying the process of coming up with something totally new, using the concepts I already understand about how cooking works. I enjoy making cuisine from different countries, roasting vegetables, making dishes with meat as well as vegetarian and vegan dishes, and most of all, I love baking. I specialize in foods that are tasty AND healthy! And I truly enjoy teaching friends who are new to cooking and seeing their eyes light up as they learn.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a teaching credential in elementary education (K-8) with endorsements in ECE, ESOL, and Spanish. I have taught elementary school full-time for 8 years. Before that, I was a substitute teacher for 9 years, mostly in elementary schools, and occasionally in middle and high schools. I love kids and helping them learn!

Theatre

I was in three musicals (high school and beyond), in a addition to various productions when I was younger. These included West Side Story and The Music Man. I was a student at the Argonaut School of the Arts, which was an intense and rigorous summer program in which we received training in acting, dancing, and singing, and then put on a show at the end of the summer. I am also an avid supporter of the arts and have enjoyed attending countless plays and musicals over the years. I was a member of the Drama Club in high school, and took a year of drama classes. I use the skills obtained through these classes and experiences in many, many ways as an educator: the training in improv helps me think on my feet and teach with a sense of humor, I know how to project my voice and vary the tone and volume of it to keep things interesting and highlight key ideas, and best of all, my experiences in drama helped me not only to overcome my fear of public speaking, but to learn to enjoy it!

Violin

I played violin for 8 years in various orchestras here in Salem (in school orchestras from 6th grade through high school, and also in the Junior and Youth Symphonies from 9th grade through my freshman year of college). I also took private lessons for over a year. In recent years, I've had the pleasure of introducing my elementary students (kindergarten through 4th grade) to the pleasure of playing violin. In addition to reading music and being classically trained, I've also had recent experience playing violin regularly with a few friends in an informal band (with piano, guitar, and drums). In the band, I learned to play by ear and play spontaneously, so I'd be happy to tutor either a student looking for classical training or one seeking training in playing spontaneously or by ear. :)
