About Brad

I am an experienced instructor and a lifetime student of mathematics and music. I have over seven years experience as an instructor of mathematics courses at Chemeketa Community College. These courses range from Basic Math (MTH020) to Introductory Trigonometery (MTH053) and Intermediate Algebra (MTH095/HS Alg 2). I have additional years of previous experience as an instructor's assistant for mathematics courses at the college.

I also serve on faculty teaching various Academic Transitions courses that include mathematics, general science, writing, social studies, and reading. Additional courses include Introduction to Music Theory (MUS111).

I serve as a frequent adjudicator for area music festivals and scholarship awards sponsored by OMTA and OFMC. I am a past Salem District President and State Board member of OFMC. I have chaired area and state composition festivals/competitions for local and regional composers.

My passion is the discovery of simplicity that dissolves the appearance of complexity in both mathematics and music. Modeling the steps of a process, queuing students during practice, and nurturing the growth of self-confidence are key components of my tutoring strategy to help students become self-sufficient, independent learners.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Piano

I received a BA degree in music from Oregon State University 1980 and a MM degree from University of Maryland, College Park 1985, both emphasis on piano performance. I received awards in piano performance including Oregon Music Teachers Association's Collegiate Instrumentalist Award. I was accepted as a contestant in the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition, Palm Desert, CA 1984. I am a frequent adjudicator for OMTA and OFMC awards and scholarship events.
