About Anthony

I am passionate about education. I am, and have been for the last ten years, home-schooling my three children in the subjects of history, geography, art (including photography and cinematography), Spanish, and soccer. My oldest, 16, is still home schooled though he attends South Salem High School as well (and is getting all A's there!).

I love the subjects I teach, and I am so sad that schools no longer focus on these subjects, which I think, in the end, hurts our country. If an American doesn't know the great things our country has done, how can we expect it to do well in the future? If students do not know where our country is in the world in relationship to all other countries or understand even the basics of other cultures, then how can our people get ahead in this world economy? If they do not understand our government, how it operates, and how the governments of other nations (our competitors) operate, then how can we get truly involved in our country and continue to make it great in this very changing and shrinking world?

And if they do not understand or appreciate art (including photography and cinematography), then how can they fully understand and benefit from the past great innovators and geniuses of our world? (Let alone carry out an interesting and meaningful conversation--which can lead to so many opportunities!)

A rounded education is the answer. A knowledge of our country and the world: its people, its artists and art, and its government. A knowledge of us.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Photography

I have over twenty years experience dealing with photography and cinematography of all kinds. I belong to the International Alliance of Cinematographers Local 600, and to OMPA, the Oregon Media Production Association in Portland, and shoot cinematography in movies, TV pilots, and commercials, as well as photography in personal portraiture and many other genres. I also belong to the Salem Photo Digital Group.

I have taught photography, its concepts, fundamentals, and its creativity to children as well as adults. I start with the basics of photography, which apply to both film and digital. We then move on to composition and the basics of getting a good shot. Then, we work with experimentation in exposure and depth of field, and advance into the philosophy of achieving compelling shots.

I look forward to sharing the wonder of image capture, and watching people marvel at what they can do with a camera.

Video Production

I have over twenty years experience dealing with photography, videography, and cinematography of all kinds.

I have taught the concepts, fundamentals, and creativity of photography/videography/cinematography to children as well as adults, and I have trained countless production assistants and young people as they entered the professional world of film and video production in Hollywood.

For future cinematographers/videographers I start with the basics of photography, which apply to both film and digital. We then move on to composition and the basics of getting a good shot. Then, we work with experimentation in exposure and depth of field, and advance into the philosophy of achieving compelling shots.

For future producers, directors, and production people, I teach the fundamentals of putting a production together, whether it be for commercials or short or long form films. Specific specialization within the industry can then be explored with more detail on an individual basis.

I look forward to sharing the wonder of moving-image capture, and the intense satisfaction of watching a film/video production come to fruition.
