I have always loved to learn and to help students achieve their goals. For more than 20 years, I taught immunology, microbiology, molecular and cellular biology, and biochemistry to medical and graduate students as a professor and research scientist in a medical school. My graduate students have honored me with an award for Teaching Excellence, and my colleagues have selected me for induction into the Academy of Master Teachers at my university. I was also given the title of Distinguished Teaching Professor. While working as a professor and scientist, I have also tutored high school students in Math and Science and advised students on science fair projects. I am enthusiastic about working with students at all levels.
In addition to tutoring Math and Science on the high school, college, and graduate level, I have specialized in tutoring for the ACT, SAT, and GRE; I will not only teach the subject, but also coach the student on strategies that can be used under the time pressure of the test.
Extensive experience as an author of scientific research and review articles, and book chapters, and as a reviewer and editor for several scientific journals allows me to be an effective tutor for English writing and reading. I am a native German speaker and thus can provide proofreading for any text in English or German.
At the middle and high school level, I specialize in tutoring MATH and SCIENCE including preparation for the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) assessment and GED, and college entrance exams.
At the college level, I tutor scientific writing, statistics, immunology, microbiology, molecular/cellular biology, and biochemistry. I also prepare students for the GRE and MCAT.
At the graduate school level, I tutor students in scientific writing, research design, and data analysis and presentation. I am also experienced with the requirements of graduate nursing programs and have worked with many nursing students.
My goal for each tutoring session is to challenge the student and provide guidance in problem-solving. My teaching method involves providing the basic knowledge of the subject, promoting a thorough understanding of the topic, and then challenging the students with a problem. Solution of the problem requires application of the previously learned knowledge, and thus instills the ability for independent thinking and problem-solving. Finally, I always provide feedback on the completed tasks.
Based on several years of experience with admissions of graduate and medical students, I can also advise on preparation for admission to graduate and medical school.
Each student has individual strengths and learning styles. I familiarize myself with each student's style, and adjust the tutoring sessions to optimize learning for the student. To ensure the best possible learning environment, I can meet with students in public library meeting rooms or in the student's home. I am also experienced in distance-education and can organize online learning sessions for students.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach your goals!
Rolf has provided examples of their subject expertise by answering 2 questions submitted by students on Wyzant’s Ask an Expert.
Rolf helped me prepare for the GRE for several weeks. Not only his tutoring helped me boost my Quantitative score by a lot, but he was always on time, patient, and friendly. We had a great experience where he helped me master different math concepts, while keeping me motivated for a ,sometimes, tedious exam. He also gave me advice me through different aspects of the process application for Grad School, counseling me on my Statement of Purpose, and my Curriculum Vitae. I thank him very much for his effort and would highly recommend him.Matias, 14 lessons with Rolf
Outstanding scientist in immunology
Rolf did a great job in helping me to understand a number of advanced concepts in immunology, and to understand the various cutting edge research tools which immunologists use, and how they design research questions.David, 2 lessons with Rolf
This is my second lesson with Rolf, he is super smart and explains things clearly. He is always on time and willing to give extra time to the student. He can help you but not give you the answer directly, makes you use your mind.Feliz, 2 lessons with Rolf
Cell signaling pathways
Rolf was very knowledgeable on this subject area. The session went exactly as I had hoped! Rolf was clear with his explanations and he was attentive to my questions. Already set up our next session.Jamie, 1 lesson with Rolf

Very Helpful Statistics Tutor
Rolf was able to assist me in troubleshooting a data analysis function within excel for two statistics models. The analysis that Rolf performed confirmed my suspicion that it appears my professor made an error, so my efforts to replicate a sample would never have been successful. The reassurance from Rolf was nice in that I was doing everything correctly. I highly recommend Rolf for anything to do with statistics.Donald, 1 lesson with Rolf

Continued PSAT Prep
Enjoyed strategies and method. Minimalistic approach works well with a type A thinker. Looking forward to more expansion and growth of knowledge.Lori , 21 lessons with Rolf

Patient and an incredible teacher
I came in barely understanding how the charges of elements work, and many other basic chemistry skills that I very well should've known by now. I was panicked, and I was failing with a 43 and my chemistry teacher was known for being a tough grader. But Rolf helped me to bring up my grade to a 73, passing, and on my way to making a B. And now currently I'm doing advanced chemistry with a 75. I can fluently understand after him explaining my questions to me and fly through my problems. And his German accent is in no way a problem in understanding him. I highly recommend him to any student in chemistry, even if it's a quick guide over a small bump in the road, or a huge reteach over every basic unit of chemistry right on the dot.Gabriela, 49 lessons with Rolf
