About Michael

Bio

Hello! I'm called Michael, and I've been teaching guitar for around 15 years now! It was my first job and it will most likely be one of my last.

I've taught literally all ages, and just about every style. One of my strongest suites is adjusting my teaching method to meet the goals and interests of the student. You'll never hear "You have to learn X style first," or "I know you like X, but you have to learn Y first."

This comes from my own experience as a student, being frustrated with...

This comes from my own experience as a student, being frustrated with teachers who are unwilling to deviate from their comfort zone in order to illustrate a concept or teach some musical idea. You know, the old "Well you want to learn metal? Okay but first we need to learn jazz/classical etc"

I say, "You want to learn Metal? Lets do it." From day 1, we will work within the contexts of YOUR musical interests and passions, not mine. Very often I will even create exercises and examples for my students which are drawn from the style of their interest and goal set. Because, believe it or not, the same musical concept CAN be taught using just about any stylistic frame of reference.

So I would say I'm very good at working with students who "aren't good students," because I was one! I work very well with students who were previously "self taught." I'm not the sort of teacher that looks to create dependent students, but I hope to empower my students. If some day you no longer need me, great! I've done my job. That means showing you how to break down difficulties and create exercises to work on difficult passages.

That being said, some students don't currently have clear musical goals and would prefer the teacher guide them in what is best for their progression as a musician, and I'm comfortable working in this mode as well.

While I've never pursued a music degree, I have a lifetime of experience with instruction and a strong, transferable grasp of music theory. I have no problem saying I don't know a thing, but it doesn't happen too often.

I've taught literally hundreds of students of all levels and ages in-person over the course of 15 years. This includes time as a private and group instructor in 2 brick-and-mortar music retail businesses. I have a strong transferable understanding of music theory, and can aid in either "formal" or "informal" musical study.
