Hi! I'm Sophie and I'm currently studying at UCLA with a major in Microbiology. Tutoring is something genuinely find rewarding and fun, and I am always inspired by every student I meet.
In high school, I was an active tutor in a non-profit organization called Students Tutor Students. Through this program, I worked closely - and formed a deep bond with - a middle school student who had fallen extremely far behind on his schoolwork and could not keep up with the learning pace of his classroom. Over the course of the school year, I was able to redefine foundational basics of math and science to him and eventually caught him back up to speed with the rest of his classmates. By the end of the year, we had completed over fifty missing assignments together and adequately prepared him for an increasingly rigorous academic career.
I was also the captain of my school's speech and debate team, and am highly proficient in speech writing and public speaking. I coached novice team members in essay crafting and effective delivery, and witnessing their success was one of the most heartening experiences of my life.
Qualifications:
Math: I received an 800 on my SAT Math II Subject Test, as well as a 5 on AP Calc AB.
Biology: I have been heavily involved in the realm of biology, research, and its medical applications since junior year of high school. I received an A in AP Biology and a 4 on the AP Biology test, as well as A's in the two fundamental biology classes I have completed thus far at UCLA.
Public speaking: I was ranked Top 5 in the state of Oregon for Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, and Radio Commentary, and have qualified - and competed in - the National Speech & Debate Tournament twice.
