Bio

I am a native Spanish speaker who was born and raised in southern Spain. I grew up in a bilingual and bicultural household. As a child, I was fortunate to frequently travel to the United States to visit my mother's family and encountered many diverse countries and cultures along the way. I am a native Spanish speaker who was born and raised in southern Spain. I grew up in a bilingual and bicultural household. As a child, I was fortunate to frequently travel to the United States to visit my mother's family and encountered many diverse countries and cultures along the way. This has greatly informed the global perspective and curiosity about the world I bring to my teaching and tutoring. I believe that all learning happens best within meaningful contexts and thus, I strive to make new material relatable to my tutee's interests and everyday experience.

I have a B.A. in Child, Youth and Family Studies from Portland State University with a concentration in Child Development. In addition to extensive coursework in child development, I have taken multiple education courses focusing on early childhood pedagogies, emergent curriculum, and how kids' brains learn through play. In recent years I have worked as a preschool teacher and afterschool assistant teacher at a K-5 elementary school. I have also volunteered as a tutor in a trauma-informed, alternative high school Spanish 1/2 class. I am currently pursuing certification as a Child Life Specialist, a pediatric healthcare professional that helps kids cope with illness and hospitalization.

I possess native fluency and outstanding knowledge of Spanish spelling and grammar rules. I lived in Spain and attended Spanish public schools until the age of 19.

Too Awesome to Share

I have hesitated to post a review because I don’t want to share Ana. Ana has been teaching (rather than most who only want to tutor) my daughter Spanish 3.5 hrs per week for approx 3 months. She is always early, conscientious, motivated and in good spirits. She takes responsibility for identifying what my daughter needs to learn and teaches it. She does not depend on me to supply resources, direction in teaching, nor expects me to motivate her. So many tutors on referral service sites have an attitude of ‘I’ll show up but don’t expect much more’. I’m expected to supply the educational materials, supply a motivated student who’ll overcome uncreative droll ramblings, plus inspire them (tutor) to do their job. I have textbooks ready to go for Ana if she needs them. But she seems to be zeroing in on particular skills necessary to carry my daughter language acquisition to the next level.
