I am passionate about teaching and equally committed to identifying ways to help my students succeed. Now retired from active college teaching, I aspire to keep that passion alive by tutoring students in the wonders of organic chemistry, be it in helping them learn to think critically about and enjoy the subject, tackle homework problems, study for exams, etc., while identifying their strengths and potential weaknesses. As the first person in my family to attend college, I was inspired by a great teacher, namely my organic chemistry professor at Luther College. I earned B.A. degrees, with honors, in both chemistry and mathematics from Luther and eventually a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Oregon.

In all, I have 42.5 years of successful experience teaching challenging organic chemistry courses, primarily, but not exclusively, to traditional college students (i.e., those aged 18–22). Most of my organic chemistry teaching experience has been at Lewis & Clark College (37 yrs), where I was a finalist for "Teacher of the Year," but I have also taught the subject at Reed College (2.5 yrs), the University of Notre Dame (2 yrs), and Boston University (1 yr).

The final 40 years of my organic chemistry teaching was distinguished by holding unique, weekly, and compulsory 1-hour "conferences" in which students worked individually and in small groups at the blackboard on a common problem they had not encountered before. These sessions invariably involved significant tutoring and should serve as valuable experience that I can pass on to you as your tutor. In general, my organic chemistry students found me enthusiastic, highly prepared, accessible, a strong motivator, and able to answer virtually all their questions.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. The experiences I gained in working with and meeting the individual needs of students representing a wide range of skill sets in my conferences, should serve me well in providing an individualized learning experience for you.

Organic Chemistry

My study toward a PhD in organic chemistry was supported by a competitive NIH Predoctoral Fellowship, and my expertise in the subject was considerably enhanced by one-year sabbaticals at MIT and the U of Washington. I have taught both semesters of Introductory Organic Chemistry, including lectures, compulsory conferences (that involved significant tutoring on my part), and laboratory, as well as several advanced organic chemistry courses including Physical Organic Chemistry (my specialty). While I have retired from classroom teaching, I keep up to date in the field by continuing to be an active scholar—publishing articles with undergraduate student coauthors in top journals and serving as an active reviewer of organic chemistry manuscripts. My most distinctive publications (2018 article in J. Org. Chem. and 2010 article in J. Am. Chem. Soc.) emerged from my most recent work in the theoretical and computational chemistry of organic chemical reactions, and hence I should be particularly skilled in tutoring the more theoretical aspects of organic chemistry (e.g., atomic and molecular orbital theory) and in how to use computer molecular modeling as a learning tool.

Helpful and empathetic tutor

James helped teach me the helpful tips in o chem that my professor never mentioned in class. I didn't realize how much of the basics had flown over my head and he helped me understand them in easy-to-remember ways. He was also very flexible with my schedule and understanding of my time commitments.

Knowledge, patient and enthusiasm tutor

My daughter desperately needed help with her organic chemistry. I was blessed that James agreed to tutor her in such a short notice. With his knowledge, enthusiasm and clear explanation, my daughter had a better understanding of the material presented in her test review, and passed her test with an A-. She really likes his teaching style! Thanks again for an amazing lesson! ~Kim

Phenomenal Tutor!!!!

Jim is a phenomenal tutor! I am so grateful to have found him, he has helped me prepare for 3 organic chemistry exams and I would not be moving on to the second part of the series without him. He is immensely knowledgeable in this field and every part of his explanation was relevant to the topic we were going over, he made learning the topics easy! His approaches helped me retain more information and develop a different perspective when I am approaching the material. I fully recommend him, he turned into an essential tool for success in the course and plan to continue studying with him going into the second part.

Very Knowledgable and Understanding Tutor

James was an excellent tutor that thoroughly and patiently explained underlying and necessary organic chemistry concepts. I had previously taken Organic Chemistry I at my undergraduate university but hadn’t seen the material in a few years. Being a post bacc student now, I wanted to review Organic Chemistry I topics to be able to enroll in the second class of the series. James readily took on this challenge and we were able to successfully cover necessary Organic Chemistry concepts in about a month. He was quickly able to gear our lessons efficiently and effectively towards my gaps and guided me on the right path. Without James, I would have been very hesitant to go into Organic Chemistry II alone. I look forward to having him as my tutor moving forward in the series.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

James was an excellent tutor. He helped me primarily review for a final exam. The results on this exam, thanks to James' lessons, saved my grade in the class. This material did not come naturally to me but having James explain topics in different ways made the material more accessible and more interesting. I only wish I had discovered James sooner, but happy that I got in touch with him when I did. He was flexible with reviewing what I needed and worked at the pace that was best for me, as well as the times I needed to meet in a busy schedule. Thank you, James!

Great Tutor

I worked with James before my O-Chem final and he exceeded my expectations as a tutor. He was able to assess my weaknesses and tailor our session to fit my needs. My only complaint is that I didn’t find him earlier in the course!!
