About Terry

I have been fortunate to spend over 25 years in education; specifically working with students with disabilities for the past 16 years. Whether it is through direct instruction, tests preparation, academic coaching, or helping students harness their executive functions and cognitive organization, I believe that there is a pathway to learning for every student. As a recent transplant to Portland from southern California where I was the Director of Special Programs and Services at a highly respected parochial/private institution, I look forward to continuing to engage with many young learners. The demands of school and homework can leave some students and families feeling overwhelmed and discouraged.

“She has led by example with her grace and compassion in helping students with varied levels of learning disabilities succeed at a very rigorous parochial high school.” -- DSPS Teacher @ Orange Lutheran High School, CA

The road to Portland started on the south side of Chicago in a 4th/5th general classroom setting. From there I transitioned into the role of an on-site consultant for private schools who wanted to serve their population with disabilities. My background in working with students with learning differences led to a Master of Arts in Multi-categorical Special Education and a passion that has transformed my teaching.

My strength has always been in creating strong relationships with my students. From there, we can work in an environment of trust and respect. We can build on a student’s inherent skills and create new pathways for information to be stored and recalled. In this age of technology, it is vital to utilize some of the tools that are available for learning, typing, taking notes, and studying so a young student can be prepared for the academic challenges that lie ahead.

I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring students in Pre-Algebra and Algebra for the past 16 years. I utilize mnemonics to help with the recall of concepts. I love to see the face of a student who finally "gets it"!

I have worked directly with English teachers and department chairs to create curriculum.
I work with students to edit their written work.
I have helped student work with assistive technology and apps to support reading comprehension.

Let’s work together not only to complete assignments, but also to ignite a love of learning for a lifetime. I’m located in Northwest Portland and am available to tutor in your home. I am prepared to surround a student with individualized support: meeting each student where he/she is. No one needs to struggle alone.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

In my role as Director of Special Programs and Services and DSPS teacher, I was honored to receive the Carol Gray Award, recognizing special education teachers who have made an outstanding contribution to the lives of children with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Over the past 16 years I have supported numerous students who have been diagnosed on the autism spectrum - high functioning. This experience, combined with a Master's in Multi-Categorical Special Education makes me uniquely qualified to offer assistance for a student with these special needs.

Dyslexia

For the past 16 years I have been the director of a program specifically tailored to address the needs of students with disabilities. In addition, I taught students who were diagnosed with the reading disability of dyslexia. With a Master's Degree in Multi-Categorical Special Education, I am uniquely qualified to tutor students who are struggling in the traditional school environment.

Special Needs

My Master's Degree from Governors State University, IL is in Multi-Categorical Special Education. I hold certification in Social/Emotional Disorders, Learning Disabilities, and Educable Mentally Handicapped. For the past eleven years I have been the Director of Special Programs and Services at Lutheran High School of Orange County, CA.

Study Skills

My Master's Degree from Governors State University, IL is in Multi-Categorical Special Education. For the past eleven years I have been the Director of Special Programs and Services at Lutheran High School of Orange County, CA. In addition to being the administrator for the DSPS Program, I also taught a Comprehensive Support Lab class that incorporated accommodations, organization, and study skills for students with disabilities.

Personable, professional and insightful tutor

Terry has started tutoring our middle school son in general subjects, with an emphasis on math. At their first meeting he was withdrawn and reluctant, but by the end he was talkative and enthusiastic about working with her. We hope to continue these sessions for the forseeable future.
