About Peter

Hi there! I am a writer and freelance editor with over twenty years experience teaching English as a second language and writing at the college level. I taught for several years in Sri Lanka and Korea and have traveled extensively. Most of my teaching experience has been in colleges and universities here in Portland, Oregon.

In the last two years, I have been self-employed, building a new career as a freelance editor. I work with book publishers and individuals in a wide range of academic and creative endeavors. In addition to this work however, I make myself available as an ESOL tutor because I enjoy the one-on-one contact with students and because I love to learn from various cultural perspectives.

I deeply enjoy writing fiction and poetry. Some of my hobbies are sailing, kayaking, hiking, woodworking, and of course traveling. I am married, with a daughter in high school and a son in college.

I hold a Master's in creative writing from Goddard College. I also hold a certificate in TESL from Portland State University as well as BA in English from University of Oregon. I am a skilled editor and proofreader and adept at identifying language transfer to English from a wide pool of language groups. Although I am fully competent in grammar knowledge, I well understand the need for a second language user to communicate effectively with comfort and increasing ability. Grammar is a set of tools to apply more than it is a set of rules to abide!

I enjoy working with language and helping people realize their goals through writing and public speaking. I miss being in the classroom as a teacher, but I also know there are many ways to help students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

In addition to many years teaching academic English, I am acquainted with language transfer to English from several language groups.

IELTS

As academic coordinator of an independent English program (Pacific International Academy) for nearly fifteen years, I worked with IELTS prep texts in classes and developed curricular materials that incorporated IELTS outcomes. Because the host university (Marylhurst University) accepted IELTS along with TOEFL scores, I worked with staff to interpret these scores for university admissions. In working with IELTS materials, I gained further knowledge of discreet differences in UK versus US English.

Literature

My first real passion as a student was literature, which is why I decided to major in English. I strongly believe in the power of story and language to unlock the creative spirit. I have taught intro and survey classes in literature and often use classic and contemporary stories, plays, poetry, and novels as aids in teaching writing.

Proofreading

I am a professional copyeditor and proofreader who has worked on hundreds of books, several masters theses, and a few blogs. I come from an academic background and easily adapt to the demands of most style guides.

TOEFL

I taught ESL in academic programs for many years and have taught TOEFL classes specifically, using TOEFL prep books and materials. I took the TOEFL some years ago to understand what testers are facing and understand both the complexity of the exam items and the need for effective test-taking skills.

Writing

I have a Master's in writing. I enjoy working with the language and especially enjoy helping others achieve their goals through writing. I have published several pieces of short fiction and poetry am currently revising a novel, so I do appreciate the ongoing act of revision!
