About Ryann

I've loved teaching and tutoring since I went to UCLA and met some of the greatest professors on the planet; they truly inspired me and are the reason I decided to pursue a career in education. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from UCLA in 2010 with my BA of English Literature and Composition, I decided to travel the world for two years; I absolutely LOVE traveling! I taught English and ESL in both Taiwan and Costa Rica for one year each. After my travels, I returned home to Southern California to continue my education and career; I very recently earned my MA of English Literature from CSULB with Honors.

Since my senior year at UCLA, I have been teaching and tutoring SAT and ACT test preparation, ESL, grammar, writing, reading comprehension, and English literature to students of all ages and backgrounds. Over the past three years, I have been tutoring and teaching SAT and ACT test preparation and college planning a lot more than in previous years; the competition to get into the great universities is fierce! Let me help you get there!

I can help you with English Literature, ESL, ACT English and Reading, SAT Writing and Critical Reading, Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Academic essay-writing (persuasive, literary analysis, narrative, expository, research -using academic secondary sources, etc.), Assistance using correct MLA format, Creative Writing, Spelling, Vocabulary, Proofreading and Editing, Organizational Skills, College Planning

I'm not your typical tutor; I take what I do very seriously, and my ultimate goal is always the success of my students, but I love to make learning fun! I believe students are much more likely to succeed academically when they are interested in what they are doing, and one of my goals is to show my students that learning and tutoring doesn't always have to be a chore! I'm a very easy-going person and I love to get to know my students; mutual trust and respect between teacher and student is immensely important.

I will always come prepared, on time, and ready to work, but I can guarantee that you won't be bored during my tutoring sessions!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I currently teach ACT Prep and SAT Prep at a College Prep Academy in Irvine, CA, and have taught it at other academies over the years as well. I know a lot about the new version of the ACT and SAT exams and can help students study so they score the highest score possible.

College Counseling

I have taught several classes at Test-Prep and College Preparation academies, such as Flex College Prep and Elite Educational Institute, so I am experienced when it comes to assisting high school students choose the best universities for their personalities and interests, as well as their academic goals and what major they plan to go into.

English

I graduated with my BA of English Literature from UCLA in 2010 with Honors; I graduated with my MA of English Literature from CSULB with Honors last year, and have been teaching and tutoring all aspects of English ever since graduating from UCLA- so it's been about 6 years that i've been teaching and tutoring. I'm also working on my teaching credential for English, so I have quite a bit of experience teaching and tutoring this subject and would love to help you if you are having any trouble with ELA. Thanks.

ESL/ESOL

I taught ESL for one year in Taiwan, and the following year I taught ESL in Costa Rica I continue to tutor and teach ESL students here in the US, as well.

Grammar

I worked at a college English Grammar Center for a year and a half where I basically helped college students practice grammar all day every day, I learned basic grammar while earning my BA of English Literature at UCLA, and while earning my master's degree at Cal State Long Beach, also in English.

I am also currently enrolled in the Single-Subject Teaching Credential Program at CSULB, where we study and discuss grammar and how to teach it regularly.

Literature

I earned my bachelor's degree in English Literature in 2010 from UCLA and graduated with honors; I earned my master's degree from Cal State Long Beach in English Literature in 2015. I have taught English literature to high school students at various college-prep academies throughout the years, and I hope to be an English Literature professor at a university some day.

Proofreading

In addition to teaching English classes and editing hundreds of essays for my students, I am a freelance proofreader and editor, so I have a lot of experience with proofreading and editing papers of all kinds.

Writing

I have taught writing courses at several private academies to students of various ages. I have taught writing to students as young as first grade, but I most often teach high school students.

I have also done a lot of writing myself while earning my BA of English Literature from UCLA with Honors, as well as my MA of English Literature at CSULB, also with Honors.

I am also currently enrolled in the Single-Subject English teaching credential program at CSULB so that I will hopefully be hired as a high school English Literature and Composition teacher.

Even though our first session was a short trial session, Ryann taught me the general format of an academic essay and she even taught me what a thesis statement really is because I didn't really understand what it was before Ryann explained it to me. She helped me write my introductory paragraph and come up with a clear thesis. She explained that a thesis statement is really important in a persuasi
