About Charles

Hi prospective students, I'm a Portland native currently working for a high tech startup. I received my B.S. in Mathematics and Physics from Carnegie Mellon in 2007. I was a teaching assistant for several classes while I attended CMU. After working on the east coast for a while, I returned to Portland, and earned my M.S. in Computer Science from Portland State. I tutored at PSU for 5 years, and was a teaching assistant for 3 different advanced computer science courses.

My cumulative GPA at Carnegie Mellon was 3.98/4.00, and my GPA at PSU was 3.99/4.00.

My strongest subjects are programming (Java, C/C++, Python, Scala, Android, Javascript), computer science theory, and a wide range of topics in mathematics. I am interested in teaching college or high school students with discrete math, probability, calculus, differential equations, or a wide range of advanced math subjects.

I am employed at the moment, but I'm interested in tutoring through Wyzant to help fund a honeymoon for me and my fiancé (we have our wedding planned for next summer), as well as paying off student loans more quickly.

I have taken dozens, if not more than a hundred advanced math classes while at Carnegie Mellon and PSU. I enjoy finding the clearest, most down-to-earth way to explain difficult concepts. I shine at explaining how proofs work, and teaching procedural concepts from calculus or differential equations.

I've worked as a software engineer for the past 6 years or so. I also really enjoyed tutoring computer science students at PSU. I have thought hard about how to explain the basics like binary trees, sort algorithms, graph algorithms, and concepts of programming.

I encourage any undergraduate, community college, or advanced high school students who need an extra push to understand some concepts in Computer Science or Math to message me! I can also help if you simply want to expand your horizons and learn something new a bit more quickly than you would on your own.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

I have a B.S. double major in Math & Physics from Carnegie Mellon University, where I took several programming courses. I also have a M.S. in Computer Science from Portland State University, where I conducted a research project in genetic algorithms. At CMU and PSU I worked as a teaching assistant for several semesters. At PSU I was a tutor in Computer Science for 3 years.

I have been working as a software engineer in the Portland area for the past 5 years, most notably for Jive Software, and currently for Premise Data Corp, a startup headquartered in San Francisco that has a small PDX office. I mostly work as a backend engineer in Java & Scala, but have also worked with Python, Javascript, ReactJS, NodeJS, and other languages & frameworks.

Discrete Math

I have a B.S. in Mathematics & Physics from Carnegie Mellon University (graduated 2007), where I received a 3.98/4.00 GPA. My focus was on proof-based math courses, such as discrete math, theory of computation, set theory, topology, graph theory, etc. I routinely participated in the Putnam mathematics competition.

At Portland State University where I received my M.S. in Computer Science, I was a teaching assistant for a logic course, and also for a course in the Theory of Computation which included discrete mathematics.
