Berklee College of Music (Music Education)
Portland State University (Master's)
Since earning my teaching degree, I have been certified as a teacher in five states. I am presently certified as an educator in both Washington and Oregon. As a classroom teacher, I have taught high school public speaking, high school math, high school health and P.E., elementary music and middle school choir. I have taught tutored students in math, English, music theory, piano, singing and drums.
In New York City, I taught in public schools, private schools, college extension division programs and in community music schools. I have been a private music teacher since 1980. I love tutoring and teaching privately as an alternative to all of the classroom teaching I have done. I like establishing a one-on-one relationship with a student and being totally undistracted by the needs of other students. This way, I can tailor-make my teaching approach to serve that individual.
I have tutored high school math students with dyslexia and other learning challenges. I am very skilled in simplifying and putting into plain language the most difficult math concepts.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
MA Music (composition, arranging, choral music), Portland State University. My final project was a concert of my original jazz compositions, which I arranged for jazz and orchestral instruments. In New York City, I worked professionally as a songwriter and composer.
BA - Performance: Drums & Percussion, Berklee College of Music. I have taught drums and percussion privately since 1980. I was a professional performer and teacher in New York City for 17 years. I specialize in all musical styles, reading and orchestral percussion.
I am certified in both Oregon and Washington to teach grades, K-12. Since first becoming certified (K-12) to teach in Massachusetts and New York in the early 90s, my actual teaching experience has focused on elementary grades. In New York, I mainly taught K-3 music. This past year in Washington, I taught music, grades 1-4. In the coming year, I will be teaching K-4 music in Oregon.
I hold a BA in music education from Berklee College of Music, Boston, and an MA in Music from Portland State University. Between 1990 and 2000, I taught general classroom music, grades K-6, in public and private schools in New York State. At the same time, I taught private students in piano, drums, voice, music theory and sight-singing. I presently hold teaching certificates, grades K-12, in both Washington and Oregon.
As music department chair and high school public teacher at the Browning School for Boys in Manhattan, I designed and taught a semester course in public speaking. Using a textbook on the subject, my freshmen students gave speeches of persuasion, commemoration and eulogy. They learned the basic tools of public speaking: extemporaneous (notecard) speaking, manuscript delivery, and impromptu speaking.
During my undergrad at Berklee College of Music, I studied solfege/sight-singing for three years and was an A student. I was teacher of voice and solfege (sight-singing) at the Long Island Conservatory, NY, 1999-2001. Last year (2015-16), I taught middle school choir in Battle Ground, WA. Each week we began our morning rehearsals with sight-singing exercises from a text on sight-singing I purchased for the class; I own this text and have found it very useful for students of all ages.
I received my MA in Music from Portland State University in Spring 2015 with a focus in choral pedagogy. Before this, I taught lower school (elementary) vocal music, grades K-6, 1995-2000 in public and private schools in New York City. During 90s, I also taught private voice students, grades 3-12, in New York City and on Long Island, NY. This past year (2015-16), I taught middle school (grades 5-8) choir and elementary (grades 1-4) general and vocal music in Battle Ground, WA.
