About Madelyn

I'm originally from Anchorage, AK. I've lived in Portland mostly for the past seven years, while in undergraduate and graduate school at Lewis and Clark College and Graduate School of Education. I have tutored ever since I was in middle school because of my high level of Spanish. I went to Spanish immersion school from age 5-12 and continued to take Spanish through my college career- it was my major.

I am now a bilingual Spanish immersion teacher at a K-8 school and have had my own second and first grade classrooms in Portland Public. I love working with people of all ages and hope to foster the love of lifelong learning.

Aside from work and my passion for language, I love to hip hop dance, run, and draw comics. In my time off, you can find me trying to longboard, snuggling my cat, or lounging in a park reading graphic novels and drawing.

In my graduate program, we had outstanding teachers who specialized in math. As a student myself, I had an overwhelmingly negative experience learning math because I was taught only one way. I have a passion for teaching math in a way that reaches all students- everyone should feel success in this subject because it's so crucial in every day life!

I have been a learner of the Spanish language for over 20 years now! I have a serious passion for it, which is why I chose to teach it every day of the school year! At my school, I speak about 90% of the day in Spanish and the rest in English. I have lived abroad in the Dominican Republic where I also studied the Spanish language.

As for French, it was my minor in college. While my French isn't as strong as my Spanish, it's still a passion of mine. I was an au pair in Switzerland for four months where I cared for three children, all under the age of five. During that time, my French really blossomed and I'm still working on it via conversations with my father, who is fluent, as well as reading French whenever I get the opportunity.

Because I know the foundations of reading and how we learn to read, I am excellently qualified to teach it, especially for beginners. I have been an avid reader myself my whole life and I enjoy many types of reading.

Please feel free to contact me- I'd love to work with you on your journey- whatever it may be. If you have any questions about myself, lessons, or scheduling, let me know- I'd be happy to answer them!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Soccer

I played soccer since age 3. I played varsity in high school for 4 years and was a starter freshman year. I also represented the state of Alaska for the Olympic team. During college, I only played one year of varsity because I chose to focus on other areas of study the last three years of school.
