About Kathy

I grew up in a small town of about 6000 people in Southern Oregon and began to paint about the same time I could hold a paintbrush. My first inspired work was of the Apollo Missions that orbited and then landed on the moon. In first grade I received an “F” in art when my teacher gave me a mimeograph copy of a pear to color, and I did my best coloring ever. My teacher informed me that “pears are not green.” I ran home in tears. In my house the pears were all different colors and besides, I was an Artist! Later I attended Oregon State University and then received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Oregon State in Psychology and Art.

One of the first paintings I ever sold was of course of green pears and I appropriately titled it “Pears are not Green!” Painting has always given me a peace that sometimes gets away from us in this busy life. I love the way it makes me feel both physically and spiritually. I can actually feel the stress leave my body when I experience the process of mixing and pushing paint around on canvas or paper, and I’ve seen the process of painting do the same for nearly everyone who tries it! When asked what my favorite medium is, I guess I would say oil painting. I do enjoy all types of painting and drawing and even sculpture on occasion.

Teaching helps keep me fresh in my own work and my students are always pushing me to challenge them in both subject matter and technique, and by staying ahead of them I am always challenging myself as well. My students have won numerous state, national, and international awards over the past 17 years. I have also helped students gain college scholarships and taught AP courses for college credit.

I like to help students learn at their own pace finding their own voice in the artwork. Learning by solving problems as they arise, creating beautiful images and completed works of art, as opposed to pages of exercises.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
