About Keith

I am a recent transplant to the Portland area after spending the last 4 and a half years in Ecuador. I have been involved in education my whole life both as a student and teacher/professor, in various environments. The last 3 years I taught full time both as a University Professor and as an Advisor/Instructor to high level executives at SABMiller- Guayaquil, the second largest beer producer in the world. Throughout my career I have been lucky and have had the opportunity to teach students of all levels, ages, and backgrounds from 3 year old kids to corporate President adults. As a student of Spanish, I continue to learn and grow, research the best learning methods and tools, and take this to the classroom. By doing so as a tutor and teacher I have helped countless students improve and advance in Spanish, English, and TOEFL test prep, and have formed many great relationships along the way. I'm easy going but like to challenge and connect with my students and really feel I do a good job adapting to allow them to get the most out of our sessions, classes, and my extensive experience. I am currently writing a book on moving from the intermediate to advanced level in Spanish which draws on everything I’ve learned along the way and also a contracted Tutor for Varsity Tutors where I teach all levels of Spanish, as well as submit AP Spanish test questions for practice exams.

I am easy-going, flexible, and have been exactly where you are right now in your language learning. I still dedicate lots of time to improving my own language skills, which in reality, never really does end no matter how adept someone is at a foreign language. As such, I know what strategies work, what makes things stick, memorization techniques, how to approach improving your listening comprehension (which at times is the hardest skill), what sources and tools that are out there that are worth your time (most if not all are free), and how to make the most out of them. And finally, apart from my experience and what in my mind is most important, is that I really do care about the success of my students no matter how cliche it sounds. I am always available after and between sessions to answer questions via email or chat and I think this is why the students I have had in the past have stayed with me, and continue to do so.

My own personal experience with Spanish and language education is interesting. I took Spanish in high school and didn't really like it but still got a decent grade. However, after a family trip to Puerto Rico which was somewhat random during my first year in college, I instantly fell in love with the language and the Latin culture. It suddenly became real and worthwhile. The beach, sound of the language, lifestyle, Spanish guitar, music, and coconut drinks really did something to me which led me to go out on a limb and do a semester abroad in Guayaquil, Ecuador. I had an amazing host family and made great friends, many of whom I still talk to and hang out with to this day. Because of experience, I dove into learning the language both formally and through self study. I changed my major to Spanish in college, did subsequent semesters abroad in Granada, Spain and again in Guayaquil, and have traveled back to the Ecuador 12 times since then, most recently, living there from 2011 until February 2016. Spanish has always been a huge part of my life and professional careers and most of that has been in the education arena. However, I have also worked in other positions were the language was required. I was the International Coordinator at a college where I was also the only Spanish point person on campus, and restaurant owner/manager where none of our 14 kitchen staff spoke English and I used Spanish daily for 3 years with them.

But maybe most importantly in terms of what I can offer as a teacher is that my last 4 1/2 years in Ecuador taught me how to approach language learning the right way and how to take this directly to the classroom where I taught and continue to teach these techniques to students with great success. Now back in the U.S., as a teacher and tutor I hope to get the chance to help you improve and advance in the language and reach all your language related goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
