About Jenkins

Originally from South Carolina, I completed my undergraduate degree at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and received a graduate degree in Modern Irish Literature at University College Cork in Cork, Ireland. I am currently pursuing a second graduate degree in Library and Information Science. By day, I use my powers for good at the Multnomah County Library.

Both of my parents are retired English teachers, so I was raised with a true respect and appreciation for the English language - and also developed some excellent grammar skills after repeated drilling! My love of teaching is inspired by my parents, and the great careers that they have both had in opening minds to new experiences and deepening each student's realization of his or her own potential. Being present at that moment of curiosity, and helping to create those sparks of connection make teaching one of the most interesting and satisfying jobs in the world.

Because of my background and multiple degrees, I specialize in tutoring for English-related subjects, including Composition, Literature and Creative Writing. I also have studied extensively in other topics, such as Gender and Sexuality Studies, Post-colonialism, and Post-modernism. I am extremely well-versed in research techniques and various citation languages, such as MLA and APA.

My goal in tutoring is to help students achieve as much as possible, without creating an information overload! Regularly scheduled check-in sessions help both sides of the tutoring equation feel comfortable and confident, and also provide support and encouragement when needed.

I am generally available in the afternoons, evenings, and weekends. My availability should become greater within the next month. I can travel to students or meet them online in whatever format works best.

I look forward to hearing from you, and to helping you achieve continued academic success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
