About Ami

Dear student,

I am here for you. Whether you are struggling with organizing your evidence, coming up with ideas, crafting clear and persuasive text, or any other aspect of writing, I want to help. Working with writers to figure out what they want to say and how to organize that into persuasive arguments has been the most rewarding part of my career in education. Trained in tutoring pedagogy at the University of Kansas by Michele Eodice (now Vice Provost of Academic Engagement at the University of Oklahoma), I bring you years of experience in teaching writing and American history.

It's no secret that writing is hard. It's hard for almost everyone, including professional writers. Becoming good at it usually requires some experimentation. After all, the strategies that work for others might not be the strategies that work for you. Because of this, I like to incorporate visual, verbal, and even kinesthetic techniques in my tutoring sessions. In my experience, it often helps to get away from the computer screen or the printed page when you feel blocked or frustrated. Letting your brain to work through an issue in a different way can often be just the thing you need to have a breakthrough. I've worked with student writers who have learning disabilities, who are gifted in language use, who are English Language Learners, who lack confidence, who are over-confident, and more. Working with you will be a pleasure for me, and I'm confident that together we can strengthen your essays and your writing skills in general.

I am highly qualified to tutor high-school and college students in writing and literature. Between 2003 and 2005, I worked as a writing consultant at the University of Kansas Writing Center where I tutored students in writing across the disciplines. This position required that I complete a graduate-level training course in how to teach and tutor writing, as well as regular continuing education workshops. Also, during that time, I earned an M.A. in American studies and taught courses in Western civilization and humanities. After completing my M.A., I began a Ph.D. program at the University of California, Davis. As part of my coursework, I took several graduate classes in English and American literature. I also taught several courses in American studies that met the upper-division writing requirement as well as lower-division writing-intensive courses in film studies, gender studies, technocultural studies, and religious studies.

As a tutor in American history, you will benefit from my deep educational background in the field of American studies, which may best be defined as an interdisciplinary approach to the study of U.S. history and culture. During my graduate studies, I've completed coursework in American women's history, the relationship between history and memory, American immigration history, the history of science and technology, American Jewish history, and the history of race in the United States. The courses I've taught in American studies have explored U.S. history from the late colonial period to the present. My dissertation focuses on the role of television in the history of U.S. racism, with a specific focus on the 1960s and 1970s. It's typical for historians to focus their own research on a narrow historical period, but coursework and teaching have ensured that I have a broad knowledge of American history generally.

My goal is for you to develop your own ideas out of the material you are studying and then present those ideas clearly and persuasively. Wherever you are at with your writing or history project, I am excited to help you find and take the next steps to making something great. Contact me today!

All my best,
Ami

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have a Master's degree in American studies, and I have taught college courses that discuss American history from the colonial period to the present.

English

I completed graduate coursework in English and American literature as part of my M.A. in American studies and Ph.D. in cultural studies.

Literature

I completed graduate coursework in English and American literature as part of my M.A. in American studies and Ph.D. in cultural studies. My M.A. thesis and Ph.D. dissertation both incorporated the use of literary criticism and textual analysis. The courses I taught in American studies required students to read and interpret novels, memoirs, and other literary works in historical context. I've taught Red Badge of Courage, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Frankenstein, The Souls of Black Folk, A Room of One's Own, My Year of Meats, the Illiad, Typical American, The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, Eden Express, and many others.

Writing

I completed graduate coursework in tutoring and teaching writing at the University of Kansas, where I worked for two years in the writing center. I continued to work as a writing tutor at UC Davis, where I helped launch a peer-tutoring service for graduate students. My writing has been published.
