About Henry

I love to learn and to help others learn, a pleasure I had for nearly forty years as a college instructor in writing and literature at The College of Wooster in Ohio. Although I taught many classes in these subjects, much of my teaching was done in one-on-one conferences on how to write for a variety of purposes: explanations, arguments, analyses, research, poetry and fiction. I worked with writers from those having basic difficulties to sophisticated seniors working on complex research papers or creative collections of stories and poems.

My primary approach is first to try to understand you as a learner, to identify not just problems but also how you work best with a particular style, and to devise a way of learning that fits both you and the form of writing to be developed. Although a writer needs to understand the "rules," such as grammar, the goal is to discover how you can learn to use both the rules and your knowledge and creativity for your own purposes.

In literature, my tutoring begins with an emphasis on comprehending the text, identifying patterns and themes, and finally coming to an analysis or interpretation that arises from this understanding and makes sense of as many aspects as possible. Literary interpretation is not a mysterious game, but a skill that can be learned and practiced by you with excellent results.

In tutoring for tests, such as the GRE or SAT, my approach focuses on understanding the kinds of thinking the tests want to identify, the ways in which the questions try to identify them, and the best strategies for answering the kinds of questions asked. Importantly too, I help the you to recognize your past experiences with these questions--perhaps in other forms--as an important way of easing anxiety about the tests.

I am a patient, understanding and experienced tutor, mentor and teacher. My basic belief is that people learn best from encouragement and practice that brings insight, and never from ridicule or harshness. I look forward to working with you to improve your skills in the subjects and goals you want to work on.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have taught literature, writing and grammar extensively. I am quite familiar with the test structure and kinds of questions asked. I am a patient and careful tutor.

English

I have taught and tutored all aspects of English language and literature--grammar, essay writing, creative writing and literary criticism. I have worked successfully with students from the sixth grade through graduate school on both short and long projects. I am very patient and seek to develop in students an independent mastery of the subject.

Grammar

I have taught and tutored students extensively in English grammar for many years. My knowledge of grammar--from parts of speech to verb tenses to writing forceful sentences--is very thorough. My emphasis focuses not just on knowing the details of grammar, but on how grammar functions to make us effective speakers and writers.

Literature

I have taught literature at all levels in college and have tutored students from sixth grade to college in literary analysis. I focus on an understanding of key elements--plot, character, setting and theme. I also put a strong emphasis on understanding more complex techniques, such as metaphor and symbol. In the end, the goal is for the reader to be able to see the literary work as an integrated whole.

Writing

I taught writing at a liberal arts college for forty years, much of it in one-on-one sessions with students in the senior year; and have been tutoring students from twelfth grade to graduate school for two years. My approach is to assess the student's needs and to work out an individual plan to help his or her writing, from the core elements of grammar to the more complex matters of organization and style.
