I also achieved my post-graduate Diploma of Education at Macquarie University and have 15+ years experience teaching Classical, Medieval, and Modern History to grades 5 - 12 and 10 years experience tutoring undergraduate students. I have also taught Geography, Commerce, World Religions, Government and Social Studies to grades 6 - 10, as well as Archaeology, (including Marine Archaeology and Archaeometry) and Historiography to grades 11 - 12, and undergraduates for over 10 years.
I have enjoyed working with a wide range of students and have been extremely effective in improving students' knowledge of content, research skills and essay development. I have recently moved to Oregon and look forward to bringing my passion and experience to students of Portland.
The History and practices of Archaeology and archaeologists is the core syllabus of 11th grade Ancient History course in Sydney Australia. Written history is fascinating, but very limited relative to the wealth of information available through archaeology. Archaeology also demands higher order critical thinking and flexibility through the interpretation of a wide variety of artefacts and the incorporation of a wide range of disciplines. I have taught and tutored this subject for 15 years.
I have a double major in Ancient and Modern History, and my passion for the subject is as strong as ever. I was the Head of Ancient History at The Hills Grammar School in Sydney Australia for 10 years and I have enjoyed working with students of all academic levels to achieve outstanding results. I have loved working with Middle School, High School and University students to help them develop a culture of learning and a genuine understanding of History. Classical History specialities include; Pre-Dynastic to Greco-Roman Egypt, Proto-Greek History (Minoans and Mycenaeans), and Roman History from foundation to collapse of the Empire (including both pagan and Christian religions). My knowledge and experience in teaching Medieval European History covers from the Barbarian Invasions to the Reformation. European colonial History is also a passion from Columbus right through to the Industrial, Haitian, French, American and even Russian Revolutions. Mythology and World Religions were elective subjects I have enjoyed teaching for over a decade and are particularly relevant today.
Only those who understand History, truly understand the world in which they live. I am not at all interested in telling students what to think, but I am passionate about teaching students HOW to think. Improving students' ability to think critically and develop their capacity for original thought by improving their research skills, broadening their perspective and interpreting (rather than simply remembering) information, are key to improvement. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
